Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the Wall

The win in court felt like a victory, but in Alexander Sterling’s world, a defeated enemy didn't surrender—they simply changed tactics.

Three weeks had passed since the deposition.

My life had transformed into an surreal blend of high-society luxury and domestic chaos. During the day, I oversaw the restructuring of The Grand Luxe Hotel’s culinary operations, transforming the pastry department into my own creative playground. In the evenings, I returned to the Gold Coast estate, where four identical seven-year-olds would routinely ambush me at the front door with school drawings, Lego creations, and endless requests for homemade cookies.

I had grown deeply attached to the quads. And, though I tried hard to deny it to myself, I was growing dangerously accustomed to the quiet, powerful presence of Alexander Sterling.

We had established an unspoken routine. After the boys went to sleep at 8:30 PM, Alexander and I would meet in the library or sit on the glass patio overlooking the dark, waves of Lake Michigan. We talked about food, about architecture, about his plans for the city, and slowly, the icy wall around him began to crumble.

I learned that he hadn't slept properly in years. I learned that he carried the overwhelming weight of keeping his family safe in a world full of predators. And I learned that beneath his terrifying reputation, he possessed a quiet, fierce tenderness that he reserved exclusively for his sons—and, increasingly, for me.

It was a cold Thursday evening around 10:00 PM.

A heavy blizzard was battering Chicago, howling against the high glass windows of the estate. The boys were asleep in their wing. Alexander was out attending an emergency board meeting downtown regarding a shipping disruption at the harbor.

I was in the grand kitchen on the first floor, wrapped in a cozy grey cashmere cardigan, testing a new recipe for vanilla-bean cardamom tarts. The kitchen smelled divine—warm butter, toasted sugar, and spice.

The heavy oak side door leading to the service entrance clicked open.

I turned around, expecting to see Viktor or one of the housekeepers returning from night duty.

A man stepped into the kitchen.

He wasn't Viktor. He was thin, wearing a damp dark delivery uniform, holding a clipboard in one hand and a small black tool case in the other. He had wet grey hair and eyes that darted nervously around the vast, high-tech kitchen.

"Oh," I said, setting my whisk down on a cloth. "Can I help you? The service staff usually handles deliveries at the front gate."

The man didn't answer right away. He set his clipboard on the marble counter, his hand slipping inside his damp jacket.

"You're the baker girl," he said, his voice flat, devoid of any delivery-driver friendliness. "The one Alexander bought."

A sudden, sharp alarm went off in my head. My instinct, honed by years of quick thinking, kicked in. I slowly reached behind me on the counter, my fingers closing around the heavy wood handle of a French rolling pin.

"You're on private property," I said, my voice dropping into a firm, icy tone. "Marco and the security team are stationed right outside."

"Marco is currently dealing with a cut fiber-optic cable at the front gatehouse," the man said, pulling a small silver silenced pistol from his jacket. "He’ll be busy for another three minutes. Plenty of time."

My blood went cold as ice.

"Arthur Vance sent you?" I whispered, keeping the rolling pin hidden behind my back.

"Mr. Vance wants his grandsons," the man said, stepping closer to the counter, aiming the silenced weapon directly at my chest. "He realizes now that as long as you're in the picture providing Alexander with a perfect domestic cover, the courts won't grant him custody. So... we're removing the cover."

Panic surged through my veins, hot and blinding. But right behind the panic came a fierce, white-hot rage.

This man was in the house where four innocent boys were sleeping upstairs. He had bypassed security to hurt this family.

"You made a mistake coming into my kitchen," I said softly.

The man frowned, confused by my tone. "What?"

In one explosive motion, I whipped the heavy wooden rolling pin from behind my back and slammed it with all my strength into a stainless-steel bowl filled with scalding hot vanilla sugar syrup sitting on the induction cooktop.

SPLASH!

The thick, boiling liquid flew straight into the man's face and chest.

He screamed in agony, dropping the silenced pistol as the hot sugar burned through his shirt. He stumbled backward, clutching his face in pain.

I didn't hesitate. I lunged across the island, grabbed the heavy iron skillet from the rack, and swung it with everything I had straight into his jaw.

CLANG!

The man hit the marble floor like a sack of bricks, knocked out cold. The pistol rolled across the tile, coming to a stop near the refrigerator.

I stood over him, panting heavily, my hands shaking uncontrollably, clutching the iron skillet like a club.

The heavy double doors of the kitchen burst open with deafening force.

Alexander Sterling stood in the doorway, his black wool coat covered in snow, his weapon drawn. Behind him were Marco and three heavily armed security guards.

Alexander’s eyes swept the scene in a fraction of a second—the unconscious man on the floor, the spilled hot syrup, the iron skillet in my hands, and the small burn mark on my left wrist where a drop of syrup had splashed.

His weapon lowered. The expression that came over his face wasn't anger; it was pure, unadulterated terror.

He dropped his gun onto the counter, rushed across the kitchen floor, and grabbed me by my shoulders, pulling me firmly into his chest.

"Claire!" he breathed heavily, his heart hammering wildly against his ribs. "Are you hit?! Did he shoot you?!"

"I'm... I'm okay," I gasped into his coat, the adrenaline beginning to crash, leaving me shaking like a leaf. "I hit him with the skillet. The boys... Alexander, are the boys okay?!"

"Marco checked their wing thirty seconds ago," Alexander whispered, his arms wrapping around me so tightly I could barely breathe. He buried his face in my hair, his body trembling with a rare, desperate emotion. "They're safe. They're asleep. You protected them."

Marco rushed forward, kneeling beside the unconscious intruder, slapping heavy zip-ties onto his wrists. "It's Vance's top fixer, Boss. He cut the gate comms five minutes ago."

Alexander slowly pulled back, looking down at my face. His dark eyes were burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage, but when his gloved hand touched my cheek, his touch was as gentle as a feather.

"He touched you," Alexander whispered, noticing the red mark on my wrist.

"It's just a splash of sugar," I whispered back, my voice cracking.

Alexander looked at Marco over my shoulder.

"Take this trash to the cellar," Alexander ordered, his voice low, cold, and final. "Call the District Attorney. Tell him Arthur Vance just authorized an armed home invasion against a private residence containing four minors. I want Vance arrested before the sun comes up."

"Yes, Mr. Sterling," Marco said, dragging the unconscious man out of the kitchen.

Alexander turned back to me. Without another word, he scooped me up into his arms, lifting me off my feet as if I weighed nothing at all.

May you like

"Alexander! Put me down, I can walk!" I protested weakly.

"No," he said simply, carrying me out of the kitchen, up the grand staircase, and straight into his private master suite.
