Chapter 5 - The Sanctuary of Saint Jude

The room fell into a terrifyingly still quiet, save for the rain lashing through the shattered balcony windows and the ragged, bloody gasps of Lorenzo Vannucci kneeling on the floor.

Roderick’s finger rested on the trigger.

For ten years, his instinct had been absolute. In his world, a threat was eliminated. A man who pointed a gun at him—or worse, threatened the woman he loved—did not leave the room breathing. That was the law he had lived by since his brother died. That was how he kept the wolves from his gates.

“Roderick, look at me,” Adriana pleaded, her hands wrapping tightly around his forearm, trying to pull his hand down. “Look at me!”

Slowly, Roderick turned his head to look at her.

Her gray eyes were fierce, bright with tears, but unwavering.

“If you kill him here,” Adriana whispered, her voice trembling with intense emotion, “this place dies. The blood on this floor will never wash out. This house is the only place in New Orleans where life is saved instead of taken. Don't turn my sanctuary into your graveyard.”

Roderick looked down at Lorenzo, whose eyes were wide with the sheer, naked terror of a man looking into his own casket.

Then Roderick looked around the room—at Dr. Beckett Hume standing protectively in front of the cots; at young Marco holding his side, watching Roderick to see what kind of monster he truly was; at the clean white bandages laid out on the table.

He remembered his brother, nineteen years old, dying in a dark alley because no one had been willing to stop the cycle of blood.

Slowly... very slowly... Roderick lowered the gun.

He looked at Cyrus. “Take Lorenzo. Deliver him to his brother, Leo Vannucci. Tell Leo that if I see Lorenzo on this side of the river again, I won't just kill him—I will seize every dock, every barge, and every warehouse the Vannucci family owns in Louisiana.”

Cyrus nodded grimly, grabbing Lorenzo by his collar and dragging the groaning man out of the room like a sack of trash.

Roderick turned back to Adriana.

She stood before him, her shoulders slumping as the adrenaline drained from her body. She looked small in the dim light, her linen blouse stained with rainwater and iodine, her hair falling loose around her neck.

Roderick didn't say a word. He stepped forward, reached out his broad, calloused hands, and gently cupped her face.

He pulled her against his chest, holding her with a fierce, protective tenderness that made her let out a deep, shuddering sob. She buried her face in his wet jacket, her arms wrapping tightly around his waist.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered into her hair, his own voice cracking. “I’m sorry I doubted you.”

“I’m sorry I kept it from you,” she wept quietly into his chest. “I just... I wanted to keep one part of me clean.”

Roderick pulled back slightly, looking down into her tear-streaked face with an expression so open, so completely free of his old coldness, that Adriana felt her breath catch.

“You don't have to hide it anymore,” Roderick said softly. “This house stays. But tomorrow, my contractors come to fix the roof. My security guards watch the perimeter from three blocks away—unseen, untouched. And Dr. Hume gets whatever medical supplies he needs, shipped directly from Switzerland, no questions asked.”

Adriana wiped her eyes, a tiny, watery smile breaking through her tears. “No invoices?”

“No invoices,” Roderick promised, his thumb brushing a tear from her cheek. “Just mercy.”
