Chapter 6 - The New Narrative
The judge didn't take long to deliberate. Ten minutes after Ethan stepped down, Magistrate Henderson slammed her gavel.
"The petition for joint physical custody is denied," the judge ruled, her gaze fixing on a sweating Derek. "Mr. Vance, your sudden paternal awakening smells heavily of financial opportunism. Sole legal and physical custody remains entirely with Ms. Morgan. Furthermore, based on the financial documents submitted today, this court is forwarding your file to the Department of Revenue for an immediate tax evasion review, and ordering mandatory child support payments of twelve hundred dollars a month, backdated to the day of the child's birth."
Derek slumped in his chair, his lawyer already packing his briefcase without looking at him.
Outside the courtroom, the hallway was flooded with the bright afternoon sun. Claire stood by the large windows, holding Sophie tightly against her shoulder. The baby was awake, cooing softly as she batted at the lapel of Claire's new grey blazer.
Ethan walked out of the double doors, pausing a few feet away. He had his hands in his pockets, a rare, relaxed smile on his face.
"You did it, Claire," he said.
Claire walked over to him, her eyes shining with tears that were no longer driven by shame or fear. She reached out, her hand resting against his sleeve. "I don't even know how to begin to thank you, Ethan. If it wasn't for that one wrong digit in the phone number..."

"It wasn't a wrong digit, Claire," Ethan said softly, looking down at Sophie, who was now reaching her tiny hands toward him. "It was exactly the number you were supposed to text."
He reached out, letting the baby wrap her small fingers around his thumb. The icy parking lot and the empty formula cans were officially a lifetime behind them. As they walked toward the elevators together, Claire looked down at her daughter and realized that the midnight knock hadn't just saved her week—it had rewritten their entire lives from the ground up.
