Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

Six months passed.
Ellie's life had transformed completely. She and Leo had moved into a beautiful, sunlit two-bedroom apartment overlooking Lincoln Park. Leo was back in college, studying computer science, his face no longer grey with warehouse dust but bright with ambition.
At Hale Meridian, Ellie was a rising star. Her analytical models had saved the company millions during a complex logistics merger. She worked late, she worked smart, and she quickly earned the respect of her team.
But her rapid rise did not go unnoticed.
Victoria Vance, the HR Director, had initially been supportive, but as she saw Julian's growing interest in Ellie, jealousy began to rot her professionalism. Victoria had been trying to capture Julian's attention for three years, hoping to secure her place as the future Mrs. Hale. Seeing a girl from a basement apartment receive private lunches with the CEO and personal invitations to Walter’s weekend tea sessions was more than she could bear.
One evening, while Ellie was working late on a quarterly audit report, Victoria entered her office.
"Ellie, still here?" Victoria asked, her smile not reaching her cold eyes. "You really are a hard worker."
"Just finishing up the projections for the Q4 report, Victoria," Ellie said, offering a polite smile.
"Well, don't work too hard. Oh, by the way, Julian asked me to deliver this to you." Victoria placed a thick, sealed envelope on Ellie’s desk. "It’s the confidential payroll data for the executive board. He wants you to run a sensitivity analysis on it tonight. He needs it on his desk by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow."
Ellie looked at the envelope. Executive payroll was highly classified, usually handled only by the CFO. "He wants me to handle this? Directly?"
"He trusts you, Ellie," Victoria said with a sweet, venomous smile. "Make sure you don't share it with anyone. It’s highly confidential."
After Victoria left, Ellie opened the envelope. She worked until 2:00 a.m., carefully inputting the data and creating a secure, encrypted model. When she finished, she sent the file directly to Julian’s private email, locked the hard copies in her drawer, and went home to get a few hours of sleep.
The next morning, the storm broke.
When Ellie arrived at the office at 8:30 a.m., she was met by two security guards.
"Ms. Carter, you need to come with us to the boardroom immediately," the head of security said, his face grim.
Ellie’s heart hammered against her ribs as she was escorted to the 50th floor. When she walked into the boardroom, she was shocked to see the entire executive board sitting in silence.
At the head of the table sat Julian, his face pale and expressionless, looking colder than the day they had first met.
Standing next to him was Victoria Vance, holding a printout of the confidential payroll data.
"Mr. Hale," Victoria said, her voice dripping with fake sorrow. "This morning at 7:00 a.m., this highly confidential executive payroll file was leaked to a major financial tabloid. The IP address of the sender has been traced directly to Ellie Carter’s personal laptop."
Ellie gasped, taking a step back. "What? No! That’s impossible! I sent the file directly to Julian’s private email last night. I didn't leak anything!"
"Ms. Carter, please," Victoria sighed, looking at her with disappointment. "We have the digital footprint. You accessed the files at 11:30 p.m. and the leak occurred at 1:15 a.m. Perhaps you were offered a lucrative sum by our competitors? It's a shame. We gave you everything, and you betrayed us."
The board members began to whisper, throwing disgusted looks at Ellie.
Ellie looked at Julian, her eyes pleading. "Julian, please. I swear to you, I didn't do this. I would never betray you. I would never betray this company."
Julian remained silent, his gray eyes staring at her. For a terrifying moment, Ellie thought she was going to lose everything—her job, her reputation, her future, and the man she had slowly, quietly fallen in love with.
"Mr. Hale," Victoria pressed, her voice urgent. "We must terminate her employment immediately and file criminal charges for corporate espionage."
Julian slowly stood up. He walked down the length of the mahogany table, stopping in front of Victoria.
"You're right, Victoria," Julian said, his voice dangerously soft. "A betrayal of this magnitude cannot go unpunished."
May you like
Victoria smiled triumphantly, looking over Julian's shoulder to throw Ellie a smug, victorious glance.
"Which is why," Julian continued, turning his cold gaze directly onto Victoria, "you are fired. Effective immediately."
