Chapter 1: The Man in the Wheelchair

The kick came so fast that half the room didn't understand what they had just witnessed.

One moment, Julian Hart sat quietly near the entrance of the Grand Loraine Hotel, holding an invitation to the city's most prestigious charity gala.

The next, Trevor Hale's polished shoe slammed into the side of his wheelchair.

The chair jerked violently.

Julian hit the marble floor.

His invitation slid away beneath a nearby table.

Gasps echoed through the lobby.

But no one moved.

No one helped.

Trevor laughed nervously.

Beside him, Vanessa Hale looked down at Julian with open disgust.

"I told you," she said coldly. "This is a private event. People like you don't belong here."

Julian slowly pushed himself upright.

His expression remained calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm that made people uncomfortable.

"I told you," he replied quietly, "that I have an invitation."

Vanessa smirked.

Then deliberately nudged the invitation farther away with her stiletto heel.

"Not anymore."

A few guests laughed.

Most looked away.

The hotel manager stood frozen.

No one wanted trouble.

No one wanted to challenge wealthy, connected people.

Julian noticed every face.

Every silence.

Every person who chose comfort over courage.

Then the grand entrance doors opened.

A cold draft swept through the lobby.

Five men in dark suits entered first.

And behind them walked Richard Hart.

Founder of Hartwell Hospitality.

Owner of the Grand Loraine.

Host of the gala.

One of the most powerful men in the room.

Richard took one look at Julian on the floor.

And instantly stopped walking.

The conversation around him died.

The smiles disappeared.

The room fell silent.

Because everyone suddenly realized something was very, very wrong.
