Chapter 3 - THE RAT IN THE TOWER

The storm outside had turned Michigan Avenue into a river of dark asphalt and flashing police lights by midnight, but inside the private library of the Hale Estate in Gold Coast, the air was suffocatingly warm and smelled of stale cognac.
Senator Richard Hale stood behind his oak desk, his face flushed red with rage, pouring his third glass of liquor with hands that were shaking visibly.
Across the room, Vanessa paced like a caged tiger, her magnificent French lace wedding gown torn at the hem, her platinum hair disheveled, her eyes bloodshot with pure, venomous fury.
"You idiot!" Vanessa screamed, slamming her crystal glass onto a side table, shattering it into a hundred glittering shards. "I told you to lay low! I told you to let my lawyers handle the non-disclosure agreements! Why did you send muscle to the Cross docks?!"
"Because Nathaniel Cross destroyed thirty years of my political career in four hours!" Senator Hale roared back, slamming his heavy fist on the desk. "He pulled six million dollars of campaign funding! The Governor’s office just canceled my endorsement meeting for tomorrow morning! My political donors are pulling out one by one because rumors are spreading that the Cross family has declared war on us!"
"And you thought burning two shipping containers would intimidate Nathaniel Cross?!" Vanessa yelled, her voice screeching with hysteria. "Do you have any idea who he is?! He doesn't play political games, Father! He controls the entire underground logistics network from here to Detroit! If he finds out you ordered that attack—"
CRASH!
The massive, reinforced mahogany doors of the library were suddenly blown off their heavy brass hinges, shattering inward with a deafening explosion of wood splinters and metal fragments.
Before the dust could even settle, six heavily armed operators in black tactical gear poured into the room, their high-intensity weapon lights blinding both the Senator and his daughter.
"DOWN ON THE FLOOR! DON'T MOVE!" a voice boomed over the tactical radios.
Senator Hale stumbled back, falling clumsily into his leather armchair, gasping for air as three red laser dots centered directly on his chest. Vanessa shrieked, backing into the corner of the room, covering her face with her trembling, manicured hands.
From the smoke and debris of the shattered doorway, Nathaniel Cross walked into the library.
He wore a long, dark wool overcoat over his black shirt, his hands casually tucked into his pockets, his posture relaxed, completely unbothered by the tactical chaos around him. Beside him walked Arthur Vance, holding a black leather briefcase.
Nathaniel walked past the crying Vanessa without giving her a single glance, stopping directly in front of Senator Hale’s desk.
"Richard," Nathaniel said smoothly, his tone as pleasant as if they were meeting for a round of golf at the country club. "You have terrible timing. I was just putting a three-year-old child to sleep."
"Nathaniel... please!" Senator Hale begged, his voice cracking with terror as he held his hands up in surrender. "It was a mistake! The men at the docks... they misinterpreted my orders! I just wanted to negotiate! I wanted to force you to sit down and talk like gentlemen!"
Nathaniel reached out, gently picking up the Senator’s crystal cognac decanter, turning it over in his hand before setting it back down with a soft click.
"Gentlemen don't bruise women, Richard," Nathaniel said softly. "And gentlemen certainly don't send masked cowards to beat innocent dock workers because their daughters got caught being cruel."
Nathaniel gestured to Arthur.
Arthur stepped forward, opening the black leather briefcase on the desk, revealing three thick stacks of legal documents and an encrypted silver hard drive.
"What... what is that?" Senator Hale whispered, staring at the hard drive with growing dread.
"That," Nathaniel explained, resting his hands on the desk, leaning down until his eyes were level with the Senator’s, "is every financial ledger from your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman for the last twelve years. It includes the wire transfers you accepted from the South Side construction cartels in exchange for city zoning permits."
Senator Hale’s face drained of every drop of blood. His mouth opened and closed like a dying fish, but no sound came out.
"If I press a single button on my phone," Nathaniel continued, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet whisper, "this hard drive is delivered directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois. You won't just lose your gubernatorial campaign, Richard. You will spend the remaining fifteen years of your miserable life in a federal penitentiary."
Vanessa rushed out from the corner, throwing herself at Nathaniel’s feet, clutching at his trousers with tears streaming down her face.
"Nathaniel! Please! I beg you!" Vanessa sobbed hysterically. "I love you! I was just stressed! I’ll go to therapy! I’ll apologize to the maid! I’ll do whatever you want! Just don't ruin my family!"
Nathaniel looked down at her.
There was no hatred in his eyes. No anger. Just a deep, profound, absolute disgust that made her feel smaller than the dust on the floor.
"You didn't love me, Vanessa," Nathaniel said flatly, pulling his leg back from her desperate grip. "You loved the power my name gave you. You loved feeling superior to women like Carol Bennett because you thought money made you a god."
He turned his gaze back to Senator Hale.
"Here are my terms, Richard," Nathaniel declared, his voice echoing through the silent, wrecked library. "First: You will announce your immediate retirement from public politics tomorrow at 8:00 AM, citing 'health reasons.' Second: You will transfer forty percent of the Hale Real Estate portfolio to the Cross Foundation's community housing trust."
Nathaniel paused, looking down at Vanessa, who was sobbing on the rug.
"Third," Nathaniel added coldly. "Vanessa will leave the city of Chicago by tomorrow evening. If she ever sets foot within fifty miles of my estate, my staff, or Carol Bennett’s family again... the federal prosecutors get the hard drive."
May you like
Senator Hale collapsed backward into his chair, weeping openly, his proud political legacy crumbling into dust in a matter of seconds.
"Sign the papers, Richard," Nathaniel ordered, tossing a gold pen onto the desk. "You have ten seconds before I make the call."
