Chapter 4 - THE VIPER’S NEST

The air in the recovery room turned to ice. Lena instinctively moved her body, shifting her position in the chair to shield Norah’s sleeping form from Vivian Cross’s predatory gaze. The old terror, the deep-seated survival instinct that had driven her to change her name and flee across state lines, flared up like an open flame.

“Mother,” Adrien said. His voice wasn't loud, but it possessed a terrifyingly calm weight that made even Vivian pause. He walked over, stepping directly between his mother and the bedside, effectively blocking her view of both Lena and the child. “You shouldn't be here. This is a restricted medical area.”

Vivian’s eyes darted around Adrien’s broad frame, her sharp gaze locking onto the medical chart hanging at the foot of the bed. Her eyes widened as she read the name: Norah Marsh. Then, her gaze flicked back to Lena’s face, zeroing in on the scar, the darkened hair, the defensive posture.

“Elena,” Vivian murmured, the name tasting like poison on her tongue. A look of profound, calculating realization crossed her elegant features. “It is you. You’re alive.”

“Her name is Lena Marsh,” Adrien corrected his mother, his tone dripping with a dangerous venom. “And the only reason she is in this hospital is because our daughter requires life-saving surgery. A surgery I am performing in forty-eight hours.”

Our daughter.

The words hung in the sterile air like a gavel strike. Vivian gasped, her manicured hand flying to her throat. She looked at the monitor, then at the child, the pieces of the puzzle clicking together with devastating speed. The secret Lena had hidden for seven years was out, laid bare under the harsh, unyielding lights of the intensive care unit.

“Adrien, you can't be serious,” Vivian hissed, her voice dropping into a fierce, urgent whisper as she stepped closer to her son. “A child? With her? Look at the girl’s records—she’s been raised in trailer parks and low-income apartments! If the board finds out you’re operating on a child with whom you have an undisclosed, highly irregular biological conflict of interest—”

“I don't care about the board,” Adrien cut her off, his eyes flashing with a primal, protective rage that Lena had never seen in him before. “And if you utter one more derogatory word about how my daughter was raised, I will have security escort you out of this building, board member or not.”

Vivian straightened her spine, her silver hair catching the fluorescent light. The mask of elegance slipped back into place, cold and unyielding. “You are emotional, Adrien. You aren't thinking like a chief of surgery. You’re thinking like a boy who was infatuated with a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Seven years ago, she ran away because she knew she didn't belong here. She took money from the family account—”

“She didn't take a dime!” Adrien roared, stepping into his mother’s space, his height completely eclipsing her. “You lied to me, mother. You told me she took a payout. You told me she left because she was greedy. But the truth is, she left because she heard how you spoke about her. She left to protect my child from you.”

Vivian didn't flinch. She simply turned her icy gaze toward Lena, her lips curling into a thin, cruel smile. “And look how well she protected her, Adrien. The child is dying of a congenital defect. She hid a Cross heir in poverty, denying her the best medical care in the world until it was almost too late. If you won't protect this family’s legacy, I will. Tomorrow morning, the family lawyers will file for emergency temporary custody based on maternal negligence and medical endangerment.”

Lena felt the world tilt. The nightmare had come true. The exact scenario she had broken her own life to avoid was unfolding right in front of her. She stood up from the chair, her body shaking so violently she had to hold onto the bedrail to keep from collapsing.

“No,” Lena whispered, her voice choked with tears. “You won't take her. You won't touch her.”

“Watch me,” Vivian said coldly. “A judge will look at your lack of stable income, your transient lifestyle, and the fact that you withheld a critically ill child from her father and her family’s medical resources for seven years. You don't stand a chance, Elena.”

“She doesn't have to,” Adrien said.

The room went dead silent. Adrien turned his back on his mother, walking over to Lena’s side. In front of Vivian’s outraged, widening eyes, he reached down and took Lena’s shaking hand, intertwining his fingers with hers in a tight, unbreakable grip.

“Because tomorrow morning,” Adrien said, looking directly at his mother with an icy finality, “Lena and I are getting married. And if you file a single custody motion against my wife, I will release the records of every illegal financial transaction, every corporate bribe, and every ethical violation you have committed on the hospital board over the last decade. I have the files, mother. I’ve had them for years. Try me.”
