Chapter 3 - The Venetian Strategy

For three weeks, the public narrative in New York was controlled entirely by Dominic Callahan.

“CALLAHAN MARITIME HEIRESS CLARE CALLAHAN MISSING: BILLIONAIRE HUSBAND OFFERS $1 MILLION REWARD FOR SAFE RETURN OF PREGNANT WIFE.”

Dominic appeared on national news broadcasts, looking distraught, worn, and deeply concerned. He played the grieving, desperate husband to perfection, telling reporters that his wife was suffering from a severe, pregnancy-induced psychological break and needed immediate medical care.

Vanessa Cole stood beside him at press conferences, managing the media with practiced, cynical perfection.

They thought they had won the public relations war. They thought my silence was proof of my instability.

They were wrong. I was waiting for thirty-four weeks.

At thirty-four weeks, my obstetrician in Albany—a trusted colleague of my late mother—confirmed that my baby was healthy, strong, and growing normally. The cardiac mutation Dominic had claimed my son carried was a complete fabrication created by a bribed private lab in Geneva to justify isolating my baby in Switzerland.

On a freezing Tuesday morning, the annual Callahan Maritime Global Shareholders Gala took place at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan.

It was Dominic’s biggest event of the year—a gathering of international shipping magnates, senators, and foreign investors. Dominic was set to announce a twenty-billion-dollar merger with a European logistics giant, consolidating his position as the king of maritime trade.

At 11:00 a.m., Dominic stood on the grand stage beneath the crystal chandeliers of the Plaza ballroom. He wore a flawless tuxedo, his dark hair slicked back, his tone commanding as he addressed the five hundred elite guests.

“Callahan Maritime has always stood on three pillars: integrity, legacy, and family,” Dominic proclaimed into the microphone, his voice echoing through the ballroom.

Suddenly, the massive dual projector screens behind him flared with white light.

The presentation showing Callahan Maritime's profit projections vanished.

In its place appeared a video stream.

The room gasped.

I sat in a bright, warm sunroom, wearing a simple cream sweater that clearly showed my thirty-four-week pregnant bump. Beside me sat Julian Vance and two former federal prosecutors.

Dominic froze on stage, his face losing every drop of color.

“Good morning, Dominic,” my voice echoed clearly through the Plaza ballroom speakers, broadcast live to every shareholder, news crew, and investor in the room.

“Clare...” Dominic stammered into his microphone, his hands trembling. “What... turn that off! Cut the feed!”

The technician in the booth tried to cut the signal, but Julian’s cyber-security team had locked the Plaza’s AV system.

“Don't turn it off, Dominic,” I continued, my voice steady, calm, and filled with unyielding power. “You told the press I was unstable. You told your investors I had run away because of pregnancy psychosis. But today, I am presenting the public with the truth.”

A document appeared on the screens behind him: the original audio recording and Italian translation of his conversation with Vanessa Cole outside the Halston Grand Hotel library.

“She has served her purpose. She carries my son. After he is born, I throw the toy away.”

The ballroom erupted into absolute chaos. Shareholders stood up in shock. Reporters scrambled to record the screens. Investors stared at Dominic with look of utter disgust.

Dominic turned toward Vanessa Cole, who looked as though she was about to throw up right on the carpet.

“Furthermore,” I said, as the second document appeared—the fraudulent Swiss clinic papers and Charles Vane’s legal conspiracy emails—“Dominic Callahan and his legal team attempted to force an illegal early labor to strip me of my parental rights and steal my son.”

Dominic grabbed the podium, his knuckles white, his gray eyes flashing with a mixture of terror and lethal rage.

“Clare!” Dominic roared into the microphone, forgetting the cameras, forgetting his investors, forgetting everything. “Where are you?!”

“I am somewhere you can never touch me again, Dominic,” I replied quietly. “And as of one hour ago, federal agents served Callahan Maritime with subpoenas for corporate tax fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy.”

I looked directly into the camera lens, holding my head high.

“You thought I was a toy you could discard, Dominic. But you forgot one thing: I translated the contracts that saved your company six years ago. I know where every body is buried.”

May you like

The screen went black.

The Plaza ballroom collapsed into a frenzy of shouting journalists and fleeing investors, while Dominic Callahan stood alone on stage, his twenty-billion-dollar empire crumbling around his feet.
