Chapter 5 - The Siege of Oakridge

Three months later, spring had returned to Chicago, painting the shores of Lake Michigan in vibrant shades of emerald and sapphire.

The scandal surrounding St. Jude’s Youth Foundation had broken wide open across national headlines. Backed by the limitless legal resources of the Whitman Foundation and federal prosecutors, the investigation unraveled a massive web of financial corruption, child neglect, and systemic abuse. Thomas Henderson and three of his top administrators were indicted on federal racketeering and embezzlement charges, facing decades behind bars.

The foundation’s assets had been seized and repurposed entirely into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation and education center for displaced children, bearing a new name chosen by Andrew and Ethan.

The Emily & Lily Foundation.

Inside the penthouse, life had taken on a rhythm that Andrew had once thought impossible. The silence was gone, replaced by the clatter of cereal bowls in the morning, the sound of Ethan practicing piano in the evenings, and the warm, chaotic laughter of a home reborn.

Yet, one final legal hurdle remained.

On a bright Tuesday morning, Andrew and Ethan sat together at the mahogany table in the federal family courthouse downtown. Ethan wore a crisp navy blazer and a striped tie, nervously adjusting his collar while Andrew signed a thick stack of final adoption decrees.

Judge Sterling—the same magistrate who had issued the emergency injunction months earlier—sat on the bench, smiling warmly down at the paperwork.

“Well, Mr. Whitman,” Judge Sterling said, adjusting his glasses and stamping the final document with a satisfying thud. “After reviewing the background checks, psychological evaluations, and the phenomenal progress Ethan has made under your care, I can officially and permanently finalize the adoption. Ethan Miller is now legally Ethan Whitman.”

Ethan’s jaw dropped. He looked up at Andrew with wide, disbelieving eyes. “Really? Forever?”

“Forever,” Andrew smiled, pulling the boy into a fierce, protective hug that made Ethan laugh out loud.

“Court is adjourned,” Judge Sterling announced, striking his gavel.

As they walked out of the courthouse steps into the warm Chicago sunshine, a small mob of reporters and photographers waited behind barricades, shouting questions about the St. Jude’s trial and the billionaire’s sudden, high-profile adoption.

Andrew didn't dodge the cameras. He didn't hide behind his security detail.

With one arm securely around Ethan’s shoulders, he walked right up to the press microphones, looking every bit the formidable titan he was—but this time, with a bright, genuine smile that lit up his entire face.

“Yes, the adoption is official,” Andrew told the crowd, his voice carrying clearly over the camera shutters. “Ethan is my son. And let this be clear to anyone in this city who thinks vulnerable children are invisible: we are going to make sure every child in Chicago has a home, a voice, and a family that will fight for them.”

The applause from the crowd drowned out the rest of the questions.
