Chapter 5 - The Unspoken Vows

The private wing of St. Jude’s Presbyterian Hospital was quiet, bathed in the soft, warm light of bedside lamps.

Outside the window, the rain had finally stopped, leaving the city glistening under a clear, starlit night sky.

In the center of the room, Claire lay in a wide hospital bed, an IV line connected to her hand, supplying her with fluids and antibiotics. The doctor had diagnosed her with severe exhaustion, malnutrition, and advanced walking pneumonia. She had been working eighteen-hour days in unheated environments, sacrificing her own meals so Lily could eat.

Beside the bed sat Edward.

He hadn't left her side for fourteen hours. He had changed out of his suit into a simple sweater, his hair untidy, his face lined with dark circles of worry.

In his lap slept Lily, curled up into a warm ball, her small thumb tucked into her mouth, snuggled safely under a soft fleece blanket. On the table beside them sat the empty cardboard box—Lily had eaten two slices of chocolate cake and a cup of warm milk before falling fast asleep in her grandfather's arms.

The sheets rustled softly. Claire opened her eyes.

She blinked against the dim light, looking around the luxurious room, before her eyes settled on Edward holding the sleeping child.

"Dad?" she murmured softly.

Edward immediately leaned forward, careful not to wake Lily. "I'm here, sweetheart. Don't try to sit up yet. You're in the hospital. The doctors say you need rest."

Claire looked at her arm with the IV tube, then at Lily sleeping peacefully on Edward’s lap. A soft, sad smile touched her lips.

"She likes you," Claire whispered. "She doesn't usually trust strangers."

"She's a Blake," Edward said gently, a faint, warm smile appearing on his tired face. "She knew her family."

Silence settled between them—not the sharp, bitter silence of the past five years, but a quiet, tender space filled with things long overdue.

"Why didn't you call me, Claire?" Edward asked softly, his eyes searching hers. "When Julian left... when Lily was born... when things got hard... why didn't you reach out?"

Claire looked away, staring out the window at the distant city lights.

"Because I was afraid," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I was afraid that if I came back, you would look at me and say, 'I told you so.' I was afraid you would take Lily and try to raise her your way, telling me I wasn't good enough to be a mother."

Edward closed his eyes as a sharp pang of pain shot through his heart. "Is that really what you thought of me?"

"It’s what I thought of myself," Claire said, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes. "I wanted so badly to prove that I was strong, that I could make it on my own without your money. But the harder I tried, the deeper I fell. And the deeper I fell, the more ashamed I became to let you see me like this."

Edward reached out with his free hand and gently took Claire’s pale fingers in his own.

"You are the strongest person I know, Claire," Edward said, his voice thick with emotion. "You raised an angel in the middle of a storm. You fought for her every single day. I couldn't have done what you did. I was the weak one, hiding behind my checkbook and my pride."

Claire looked at her father, seeing the profound sincerity in his eyes—a softness she had spent her entire youth longing to see.

"Can we start over, Dad?" she asked quietly.

Edward squeezed her hand, bringing it to his lips and kissing her knuckles. "We already have, sweetheart. We already have."
