Part 4: The Inconsistencies and the Confrontation

The next morning, Tomás requested a private meeting with the lead pediatrician, Dr. Alana Mendez, in her office. He needed answers that his wife’s dramatic explanations couldn't provide.

"Dr. Mendez, please be straight with me," Tomás said, leaning over the desk. "What exactly was found in my son's system?"

Dr. Mendez sighed, pulling up the lab reports. "Mr. Montiel, the toxicology report from the bottle residue and your son's blood shows a massive dose of a highly regulated, liquid-form pharmaceutical sedative called Somnilux. It’s a prescription-strength medication used for severe adult insomnia."

Tomás froze. "A liquid sedative?"

"Yes. And there’s something else you should know," Dr. Mendez continued, looking at him with intense seriousness. "The maid, Rosa, arrived here entirely barefoot, covered in cuts and thorns, crying hysterically. She didn't ask for money. She begged us to save the baby and immediately handed over the bottle as evidence. In my twenty years of medicine, I have never seen a criminal extortionist act with such desperate, self-sacrificing care for their victim. She saved your son’s life, Mr. Montiel. If she had left him in that house for another hour, his brain would have suffered irreversible oxygen deprivation."

Tomás’s mind raced. Somnilux. He knew that medication. Valeria kept a bottle of it in her vanity drawer because she complained that the baby’s crying ruined her beauty sleep.

Without a word, Tomás left the hospital and drove straight to the police precinct. Using his financial influence, he demanded a private interrogation room with Rosa.

When the guards pushed Rosa into the room, Tomás gasped. Her face was pale, her clothes were torn, and her hands were heavily bruised. She looked terrified, but when she saw him, her eyes flamed with a desperate intensity.

"Mr. Tomás!" she cried, rushing toward the table before the guards pulled her back. "Please, you have to believe me! I didn't hurt Santi! I love him like my own! It was Madame Valeria! I saw her with my own eyes! She poured the liquid into the bottle and said she was sick of him crying! She threatened to deport me if I spoke!"

Tomás sat across from her, his hands trembling. "Rosa... Valeria says you demanded a million pesos from her."

"I don't want your money!" Rosa sobbed, tears streaming down her dirty face. "I only wanted to buy glasses for my boy Mateo! I only wanted to go home to my Lupita! I stayed in your house and took the insults because I needed to feed my family, but I would never, ever hurt a baby! Please, look at the house cameras! Look at her medicine cabinet!"

Tomás closed his eyes. The weight of the truth crashed down on him. There were no cameras inside the kitchen—Valeria had insisted on removing them for "privacy" months ago. But Tomás knew his wife. He knew her vanity, her cruelty, and her complete lack of empathy. He had ignored it for too long to preserve his own comfort.

"I believe you, Rosa," Tomás whispered, looking up with tears in his own eyes. "And I am going to get you out of here."
