Chapter 4 - Secrets in the Ash

The fire crackled softly in the hearth, throwing long, amber fingers across the Persian rug as Elena stared up at Adrian in stunned silence. The word cousin seemed to echo off the mahogany bookshelves like a foreign language she couldn’t quite translate.

“Cousin?” Elena’s voice was barely a breath. A humorless, brittle laugh escaped her lips. “Are you out of your mind? My mother spent twenty years hiding in damp basements, working three jobs until her fingers bled, terrified that one of your father’s fixers would hunt us down and finish what the fire started! We aren't your family, Mr. Vale. We are the collateral damage of your grandfather’s offshore accounts.”

Adrian released her wrist slowly, taking a half-step back as if physically struck by the accusation. He shoved both hands into the pockets of his trousers, his shoulders slumping slightly under an invisible weight.

“My grandfather’s accounts were audited and frozen the week he died,” Adrian said, his voice hard, though his eyes remained fixed on the floor. “And my father spent the last ten years of his life trying to find your mother to make amends. He knew the fire wasn't an accident, Elena. It was set by the same syndicate board members who tried to orchestrate a hostile takeover of our shipping lanes back in ninety-nine.”

Elena crossed her arms defensively over her black apron. “Forgive me if I don’t shed a tear for the Vale family’s internal corporate politics. While your father was ‘trying to make amends,’ my mother was dying of kidney failure in a county clinic because we couldn't afford the co-pay. While you were stepping out of private jets and buying art auctions, my daughter was eating dry cereal for dinner.”

Adrian didn't interrupt. He absorbed every word like a man standing patiently before a firing squad, taking the punishment he believed he deserved.

“I didn't know,” Adrian said quietly. “Until last night, I thought the Vane line was completely extinguished. I had no idea you were working inside my own house.”

“Because your security vetting process is a joke,” Elena snapped. “I applied under my middle name—Elena Vance. Your HR department saw a woman desperate for a paycheck, handed me a mop, and told me to stay out of the family wing. They didn’t care who I was, as long as the floors were polished by six in the morning.”

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the study once more.

Adrian walked over to the mahogany desk, picked up the million-dollar check that Elena had dropped on the edge of the blotter, and held it out toward her.

“Take it,” he said.

Elena didn't move. “I told you, I don’t want your—3”

“It’s not charity,” Adrian interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. “It’s back pay. For twenty years of hiding from a threat my family created. Use it to get your mother out of that basement. Use it to buy a house with a proper dance studio for Lucia. And then... help me.”

Elena narrowed her eyes. “Help you do what?”

“Dante is moving,” Adrian said, his jaw tightening as he uttered the name.

Elena froze. The color drained from her face. “Dante? Your cousin Dante? I thought he was in Zurich managing the European shipping division.”

“Dante flew into Boston three days ago,” Adrian said, walking back toward the fireplace and staring into the flames. “The same day Celeste announced our engagement in the papers. He didn't come back for the wedding, Elena. He came back because he found out about the old Vane trust documents hidden in the ancestral vault—documents that prove my grandfather intended to split the shipping empire fifty-fifty between our two families before the fire.”

A cold dread pooled in Elena’s stomach. “He’s back to finish the job.”

“He thinks I’m distracted by high society, corporate mergers, and a vapid fiancée,” Adrian said, a dark, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. “He thinks he can easily sweep the last remaining heirs of the Vane family under the rug while everyone is looking the other way.”

He turned around, locking his gaze onto Elena with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“I broke off the engagement with Celeste twenty minutes after she left the estate,” Adrian stated flatly. “And as of tomorrow morning, you and Lucia are moving out of the staff quarters and into the master guest wing of this house.”

May you like

“Are you insane?” Elena hissed, stepping forward. “Move into a target zone? Dante will tear us apart the moment he finds out who we are!”

“Dante won’t find out,” Adrian murmured, stepping close enough that Elena could feel the heat radiating from his chest. “Because to the rest of Boston, you’re no longer a maid. From tomorrow morning onward... you’re my newly discovered fiancée.”
