Chapter 3 - The Cornered Snake

Three days after Ethan’s arrest, the storm had shifted entirely to Madison.

She was staying at a mid-tier long-term stay hotel near the airport, having been locked out of Ethan’s suburban mansion by court-appointed receivers. Her credit cards were declined, her social media accounts were flooded with thousands of hateful comments, and her high-society friends had blocked her phone number.

She sat on the edge of a unmade queen-sized bed, surrounded by half-unpacked designer suitcases, holding a lukewarm cup of instant coffee. The baby, Leo, was sleeping fitfully in a portable crib near the window.

The door to her room rattled with a heavy, forceful knock.

Madison jumped, her heart pounding in her throat. She crept to the door and looked through the peep-hole.

Standing in the dimly lit hallway was not the police, nor was it Ethan’s lawyers.

It was Dr. Keller—the disgraced former physician from Greenfield Fertility. He wore a rumpled coat, a low baseball cap, and looked like a man who hadn't slept in a week.

Madison opened the door two inches, keeping the security chain engaged. "What are you doing here?! The police are looking for you!"

"Open the door, Madison," Keller growled, pushing his weight against the wood. "Or I call the State Prosecutor right now and tell them you paid me two hundred thousand dollars to lace Claire Sterling’s hormone therapy with toxic compounds."

Madison’s hands shook violently as she unhooked the chain and let him in.

Keller shoved his way into the room, locking the door behind him. "You told me Ethan Vance’s legal team had everything locked down! You told me there was zero chance of a forensic audit! Now my bank accounts in the Caymans are frozen, and federal marshals are at my wife's house in New Hampshire!"

"I didn't know!" Madison shrieked, clutching her head. "I didn't know Claire was working with Adrian Vale! She was supposed to be depressed! She was supposed to be broken!"

"Well, she’s not broken, you idiot!" Keller spat, pacing the small room like a caged animal. "She had a complete toxicological panel done three months ago! They traced the chemical signature of the progestin antagonists directly to the batch numbers I ordered through my shell company! They have my signature on the requisition orders! They have your emails approving the dosage increases!"

Madison sank onto the bed, burying her face in her hands. "What do we do? Keller, please, you have to help me! I have a baby!"

"That baby is your only leverage," Keller said, his eyes narrowing into something dark and ruthless. "Ethan’s family has trust money set aside for first-born heirs. Even if Ethan goes to prison, the Vance family trust is managed by an independent bank board in New York. If that kid is legally recognized as Ethan’s heir, you can claim a five-million-dollar lump-sum child support settlement."

Madison looked up, a glimmer of desperate hope touching her eyes. "How? Ethan knows he’s infertile! He knows about the donor sperm!"

"Ethan knows what Vale told him at the hospital," Keller sneered, pulling a small silver flash drive from his pocket. "What Vale doesn't know is that I kept duplicate records of the actual genetic blend used during your procedure. You didn't just use an anonymous donor, Madison. You used donor material from a high-profile donor line linked to Ethan’s own distant cousin—a sample stored at Greenfield four years ago."

Madison stared at him, stunned. "What?"

"I covered your tracks better than you think," Keller said with a sinister grin. "Legally, genetically, the kid carries Vance family DNA. It’s close enough to pass a standard court-ordered paternity test if the methodology isn't ultra-specific. But I want half of that trust money, Madison. Five hundred thousand upfront, and fifty percent of the monthly payout."

"I don't have five hundred thousand dollars!" she cried.

"Then you better go ask your former best friend for a loan," Keller said, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. "Because if I don't get a cash advance by tomorrow night to buy a ticket to South America, I’m walking into the District Attorney’s office and giving them the video recordings of you handing me cash in the parking lot of Greenfield Clinic."

He turned and walked out, slamming the hotel door behind him.

Madison sat alone in the dim room, the baby’s quiet breathing filling the silence. She looked at her phone on the nightstand.

There was only one person left in Boston who had the power to save her from a ten-year prison sentence.

She picked up the phone and dialed a number she used to know by heart.

"Claire?" Madison sobbed into the receiver the moment the line connected. "Claire, please... please don't hang up. I'm begging you. He's going to kill me. Keller is going to ruin everything!"

On the other end of the line, sitting in the warm, bright living room of my new townhouse overlooking the public gardens, I took a quiet sip of chamomile tea. Adrian was sitting across from me at the dining table, reviewing financial papers for my foundation’s relaunch.

"Hello, Madison," I said smoothly. "I was wondering when you'd call."
