Chapter 2: The Illusion of Power

For the next two weeks, I played the role of the perfect, submissive wife.
It was the hardest acting performance of my life. Every time Ethan kissed my cheek, my skin crawled. Every time Vanessa called me "darling daughter" and handed me tea, I wondered if she was already trying to poison me. But I smiled, I cooked, and I pretended to be completely oblivious.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the Carter empire was moving like a silent, massive predator.
My father’s private investigators uncovered everything. Ethan wasn't just a liar; he was a fraud. The "marketing firm" he claimed to own was drowning in debt. He had been embezzlement money from his own clients to fund Monica’s luxury lifestyle. Speaking of Monica, she was a mid-level influencer who constantly posted photos of "her wealthy, mysterious fiancé"—always hiding Ethan’s face, waiting for the day they could publicly debut their relationship using my money.
On Friday evening, exactly fourteen days after the wedding, Ethan came home to our Oakwood Hills apartment looking ecstatic. He poured two glasses of wine and handed one to me.
"Emma, sweetheart," he said, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind. I forced myself not to flinch. "The bank finally processed our joint financial portfolio. To celebrate, my mother wants to host a small family dinner party tomorrow night. Just us, her, and a few close family friends at the Grand Horizon Restaurant."
The Grand Horizon. A five-star restaurant owned entirely by a subsidiary of Apex Development. My father’s company.
"A dinner party? That sounds lovely, Ethan," I said, turning around in his arms and giving him a sweet, innocent look. "Should I invite anyone? Maybe a few people from my side?"
Ethan’s eyes flashed with a hint of disdain, though he covered it quickly with a smile. "Oh, honey, you know your friends from the administrative office might feel a bit out of place with my mother’s friends. Let's keep it intimate. Just our inner circle."
Translation: He didn't want any witnesses who might actually care about me when the trap sprang.
"Alright," I whispered, sipping my wine. "Whatever you think is best, modern husband."
The next evening, the trap was set—but not the one Ethan expected.
I wore a stunning, emerald-green silk dress. It was a designer piece my father had gifted me years ago, one I had kept hidden in the back of the closet so Ethan wouldn't suspect my true wealth. When Ethan saw me, his eyes widened.
"Emma... that dress. It looks... expensive," he said, a sudden frown crossing his face.
"Oh, this?" I laughed lightly, spinning around. "I bought it at a thrift store downtown. A lucky find!"
He instantly relaxed, a smirk playing on his lips. "Ah. Right. Beautiful."
When we arrived at the Grand Horizon, we were escorted to a private, luxury dining room on the top floor. Vanessa was already sitting there, draped in fake pearls and an arrogant smile. Beside her sat a beautiful woman with a noticeable baby bump, wearing a tight red dress.
Monica.
My heart beat steadily. I didn't panic. I felt an exhilarating rush of pure adrenaline.
"Emma, darling!" Vanessa stood up, not even bothering to hug me this time. "This is Monica. She’s a... very close family friend. She’ll be joining us tonight."
Monica looked me up and down, a smug, victorious smile on her lips. "Nice to meet you, Emma. Ethan has told me so much about you. Especially how... simple you are."
"Nice to meet you too, Monica," I said, taking my seat directly across from her. "Congratulations on the pregnancy. How many months?"
Monica smirked, glancing at Ethan. "Five months. The father is an incredibly successful man. He's about to inherit a massive fortune and a gorgeous new property in Oakwood Hills."
Ethan coughed nervously, clearing his throat. "Alright, let's order food. Waiter!"
The dinner proceeded with thick, suffocating layers of disrespect. Vanessa and Monica openly dropped hints about "big changes" coming, laughing between themselves. Ethan kept checking his phone, looking smug. They truly believed they had cornered a helpless, family-less girl. They thought tonight was the night they would drop the first hint of my "mental instability."
Halfway through the main course, Vanessa wiped her mouth with a napkin and looked at me coldly. "Emma, let's cut to the chase. Ethan and I have been reviewing the family assets. We feel that the Oakwood Hills apartment is too much responsibility for someone of your... background. Tomorrow, Ethan will be signing the deed over to his name entirely for tax purposes."
"Oh?" I set my fork down. "But I paid for that apartment with my own savings, Vanessa. Every single dollar."
Ethan leaned forward, his voice dropping the gentle facade completely. "Emma, don't be difficult. You're just a secretary. You don't understand finances. The money came from my account technically, remember? If you fight us on this, we have witnesses who will testify that you've been acting emotionally unstable and manic lately. We don't want to involve doctors, do we?"
Monica leaned back, crossing her arms over her pregnant belly. "Just sign the papers, Emma. Know your place. You got your two weeks of being a wealthy man's wife. Now it's time to wake up."
I looked at Ethan. "Is this what you really want, Ethan? You don't love me?"
Ethan laughed, a cold, ugly sound. "Love you? Emma, look at yourself. You're boring. You're plain. I endured two years of your cheap lifestyle just to get my hands on that property. Now, sign the papers, or we will ruin your reputation so badly you won't even be able to get a job cleaning toilets in this city."
The room was completely quiet. Vanessa smiled. Monica sneered. Ethan looked at me like I was an ant beneath his shoe.
I took a deep breath, picked up my glass of water, and took a slow sip.
"You know," I said, my voice echoing clearly in the silent room, "my father always told me that rats only show themselves when they think the lights are completely off."

Ethan frowned. "What did you just say?"
I reached into my purse, pulled out a small, sleek remote control, and pressed the button.
