Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

The fallout from the courthouse steps was swift, relentless, and completely catastrophic for the Sterling family.

By five o'clock that evening, the audio recording of Brandon’s morning demands had gone viral across every major social media platform in the country. Local news stations played the clip on repeat during their dinner broadcasts, framing it as a textbook case of domestic abuse and financial manipulation disguised as a high-society marriage.

The public perception inverted instantly.

The online crowd that had spent twenty-four hours harassing me online turned their collective rage directly toward Brandon and his family. Monica’s social media accounts were flooded with tens of thousands of hostile comments, forcing her to delete her profiles entirely within hours.

The real destruction, however, happened behind closed financial doors.

At eight o'clock the following morning, I sat in Eduardo Mendoza’s office, sipping hot chamomile tea while Eduardo reviewed a series of urgent legal notices that had been delivered to his desk overnight.

“It’s over for Patrick’s logistics firm,” Eduardo said, tossing a paper across the desk to my father. “The moment yesterday’s news broadcast aired, his three primary commercial clients invoked the reputational damage clauses in their contracts. They terminated their shipping agreements effective immediately.”

My father scanned the document. “And his bank loans?”

“Banco Nacional called in his three-million-dollar commercial line of credit this morning,” Eduardo smiled dryly. “Patrick had pledged his company’s accounts receivable as collateral, relying on the six hundred and fifty thousand dollars from Melanie’s Santander account to satisfy his quarterly interest payment due tomorrow. Without those funds, his business is officially insolvent.”

My phone chimed with an incoming email notification.

It was a direct message sent from Brandon’s personal email address. The arrogant, demanding tone from two days ago was completely gone, replaced by a desperate, rambling plea:

Melanie, please. I am begging you to talk to me. My father had a minor heart attack on the court steps yesterday. He is currently in the hospital. The bank is foreclosing on our house. My mother is hysterical. I know I said terrible things on Tuesday morning. I was stressed, Melanie! My father was pressuring me to secure the money, and I didn't know how to handle it. I love you. Please drop the lawsuit and unfreeze at least two hundred thousand dollars so we can pay my father’s medical bills and keep the house. We can start over. I promise I will treat you like a queen.

I read the email twice, feeling neither anger nor pity. The emotional tie that had bound me to Brandon for eight months had been completely severed the second that greasy rag hit my face.

I forwarded the email directly to Eduardo.

“Do not reply,” Eduardo instructed gently. “He is trying to establish a paper trail showing remorse to mitigate damages in our civil lawsuit. We will let the court handle him.”

Two days later, the civil court judge signed an emergency asset injunction freezing all of Brandon, Patrick, and Brenda’s personal real estate holdings pending the outcome of our defamation lawsuit.

Because Brandon had signed the mortgage documents for his house using his father as a guarantor, and because Patrick’s corporate insolvency had triggered cross-default provisions across all family assets, the bank placed a legal seizure lock on the very house I had walked out of.

Brandon, who had proudly declared that I would live in his house as an unpaid maid, was given forty-eight hours by the sheriff’s department to vacate the property.
