Chapter 2 - The Mugshot and the Sister's Tears

By midnight, the second emergency operation was complete.

I was transferred out of the general recovery unit and moved into a restricted-access room in the Intensive Care Unit on the fifth floor. A armed hospital guard was stationed right outside my door—a precautionary measure ordered by Dr. Thorne after learning that the woman who had assaulted me was a high-profile Charleston socialite with deep financial resources.

I drifted in and out of consciousness through a heavy fog of morphine and antibiotic infusions. Every time I opened my eyes, Daniel was there. He hadn't left his chair beside my bed for a single second. He had borrowed a pair of blue surgical scrubs from the nurse's station to replace his ruined wedding suit, and he sat with a notepad on his lap, taking frantic notes while speaking in quiet, tense whispers into his phone.

At 2:15 AM, the door to my room opened softly.

Daniel immediately stood up, stepping between the door and my bed in an instinctive defensive posture.

A young woman in a crumpled, champagne-pink silk bridesmaid robe stepped inside. Her hair, which had been styled into an elaborate, pearl-studded updo for her five-hundred-guest wedding twelve hours earlier, was now a tangled mess around her shoulders. Her face was swollen, her eyes red-rimmed from hours of crying.

It was Megan—Daniel’s younger sister, the bride.

Behind her stood her newlywed husband, Ethan Vance, wearing his tuxedo trousers and an unbuttoned dress shirt. Ethan looked exhausted, nervous, and profoundly embarrassed as he held Megan's elbow to steady her.

"Daniel..." Megan sobbed, taking a hesitant step into the room.

Daniel’s expression remained cold, unyielding, and carved from marble. "What are you doing here, Megan?"

"I... I came as soon as Ethan’s dad picked us up from the police station," Megan whimpered, clutching her robe around her chest. "Daniel, please... you have to tell me the truth. The police came to the country club during the reception dinner. They walked right onto the dance floor while Mom was giving a toast and put her in handcuffs in front of everyone! In front of Ethan’s family! In front of his father’s business partners!"

"She assaulted my wife, Megan," Daniel said flatly. His voice had no warmth, no sibling familiarity. It was the tone of a stranger. "She walked into a restricted surgical recovery room, called Laura a 'pathetic wretch,' and slammed her fist directly into her fresh appendectomy incision."

Megan gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. "No... no, Mom said... Mom told the police that Laura started screaming at her! Mom said she just reached out to touch her arm and Laura threw herself out of bed to make a scene because she was mad she missed the wedding!"

"Your mother lied," a raspy voice cut through the quiet room.

Megan and Ethan both turned to look at the bed.

I struggled to turn my head toward them, the oxygen cannula buzzing softly in my nose. "She didn't touch my arm, Megan," I rasped, my voice raw from being intubated twice in a single twelve-hour period. "She hit me where the surgeon cut me open. She yanked my drainage tube out. My incision ripped open, and I bled out onto the sheets until Daniel threw her off me."

Ethan stared at me in horror, his jaw dropping open. "Jesus Christ..." he whispered, turning to look at his wife. "Megan... your mother is insane. She actually did it."

"No!" Megan cried out, shaking her head in frantic denial, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Mom wouldn't... she was just stressed! She was upset because the wedding seating was ruined and Daniel wasn't there! Daniel, you were supposed to walk her down the aisle! You were supposed to give the main family toast! You abandoned us for a stomachache!"

Daniel’s eyes flashed with a blinding, lethal fury that made Megan freeze in her tracks.

He walked over to his laptop sitting on the side table, turned the screen toward Megan, and pressed play.

"This is the security video from the recovery room," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "The hospital provided it to the Charleston Police Department fifteen minutes ago. Watch it, Megan. Watch your loving mother."

On the high-definition screen, the surveillance footage played with terrifying clarity.

The video showed Linda barging through the door in her silver gown. It showed Daniel standing up and telling her to leave. It showed Linda walking directly to my bed, lowering her face to mine, and then raising her hand and bringing her fist down with full force right onto my abdomen.

It captured the exact moment my body convulsed in agony, the sudden eruption of red blood soaking through the white blanket, and Daniel lunging forward to hurl his mother back against the wall.

Megan stared at the screen, her face turning pale green. She staggered back two paces, bumping into Ethan, her hand clutching her throat as if she were about to throw up.

"Oh my God..." Megan choked out, falling to her knees on the cold tile floor. "Oh my God... she... she really hit her..."

"She didn't just hit her," Daniel said coldly, closing the laptop with a sharp snap. "She committed a felony assault on a defenseless person. Dr. Thorne testified to the magistrate an hour ago that the blow caused acute internal hemorrhaging that required a second emergency surgery. If I hadn't been in that room, Laura could have suffered fatal septic shock."

Ethan stepped forward, looking down at his kneeling wife with disgust, then up at Daniel. "Daniel... I am so, so sorry. My father and I had no idea. Linda told us at the venue that Laura was faking it to steal Megan's spotlight. My dad was actually going to pay her bail tonight."

"If your father pays her bail, Ethan," Daniel warned softly, "I will ensure that every media outlet in South Carolina receives a copy of this video along with Linda Whitmore’s mugshot. Let's see how that affects your family’s real estate firm."

Ethan swallowed hard, backing away immediately. "We won't touch it. I swear to you, Daniel. We won't pay a single cent."

"Daniel... please," Megan wept, looking up from the floor with pleading eyes. "She’s sixty-two years old! She can't go to jail! It will ruin our family’s reputation forever! Everyone in Charleston society will talk about this! What will Ethan’s parents think of me?!"

Daniel looked down at his sister—the girl he had protected, funded, and cared for ever since their father died eight years ago. He looked at her designer robe, her diamond engagement ring, and her utter lack of concern for the woman lying in the hospital bed fighting for her life.

"You care about your country club reputation, Megan?" Daniel asked softly. "Your sister-in-law nearly died today. Her appendix ruptured while she was trying to get dressed for your wedding because she didn't want to disappoint you."

"I... I didn't know—"

"You didn't care," Daniel interrupted coldly. "Get out of this room, Megan. Go back to your bridal suite. Enjoy your honeymoon. Because as of tonight, you no longer have a brother."

"Daniel, no!" Megan screamed as Ethan pulled her up from the floor. "You can't do this! You can't destroy our family over an accident!"

"It was no accident," Daniel said, turning his back on her and sitting back down beside my bed. "And you aren't my family anymore. Guard, clear this room."

The armed guard outside stepped into the doorway, his hand resting on his holster. "Ma'am, sir, you need to leave right now before I cite you for trespassing."

Ethan dragged a sobbing, screaming Megan out into the corridor. The doors clicked shut, leaving us once again in the heavy, sterile silence of the ICU.

Daniel reached out, taking my frail, trembling hand in his. He brought my fingers to his mouth, kissing them gently, his tears wetting my knuckles.

"I'm sorry, Laura," he whispered, his voice cracking with absolute heartbreak. "I am so, so sorry I let those monsters into your life."

"Daniel..." I whispered softly. "What happens now?"

Daniel looked up at me, his eyes dark, dangerous, and completely stripped of fear.

"Now," he said, "I burn their world to the ground."
