Chapter 3 - The Dark Cabin

Night fell hard and fast over the snow-covered roads of northern Carolina.

By 8:00 PM, Daniel and I were sitting in the quiet waiting room of the hospital burn unit. Through the glass window, we could see Emma sleeping peacefully under a light white sheet, a soft blue bandage covering the entire left side of her face. The IV drip clicked rhythmically beside her bed.

Daniel sat in a vinyl chair, staring at his phone screen.

"He called me," Daniel whispered suddenly.

I whipped my head toward him. "What?"

"My father," Daniel said, his hands shaking as he held up the phone. "He sent a text message from an burner number two minutes ago."

I scrambled off my chair, kneeling beside Daniel to look at the screen.

Unknown Number (8:02 PM): Daniel. Come to the cabin alone. Bring the master ledger from the safe in your office. If you bring the police, or if Clara comes with you, I will release the secondary wire transfers that will bankrupt your business and put you in prison as my co-conspirator. You have two hours.

"He’s at the mountain cabin," I gasped, my blood running cold. "He’s hiding at the hunting lodge."

"He framed me," Daniel said, pointing to the text. "He set up the Panamanian shell company using my tax ID! If he executes those secondary transfers, on paper it will look like I was the one laundering the money with him! The police will arrest me as his accomplice!"

"We have to call Detective Miller right now," I said, reaching for my phone.

"No!" Daniel grabbed my wrist, his eyes wild with desperation. "Clara, look at what he did to Emma! He’s cornered! If he knows the police are coming up that mountain, he’ll burn the cabin to the ground—along with the master financial ledgers that prove my innocence!"

"Daniel, you cannot go up that mountain alone!" I shouted, keeping my voice low enough not to wake the children in the adjacent hospital rooms. "He tried to burn our daughter's face off! Do you honestly think he won't kill you if you step into that lodge?!"

Daniel looked toward the glass window, gazing at Emma’s small, bandaged face under the sterile hospital lights.

"He destroyed my daughter," Daniel said, his tone dropping into a terrifying, icy calm. "He destroyed my home. I am going to that cabin, Clara. Not to make a deal with him... but to finish this."

"I'm coming with you," I said firmly.

"No! It's too dangerous!"

"I am not asking for your permission, Daniel!" I snapped, my eyes blazing with unyielding resolve. "He targeted my daughter. He tried to ruin my family. You are not going up that dark mountain alone while that monster sits in the shadows. We go together, or I call Miller right now and let the SWAT team take that cabin apart!"

Daniel stared at me for three long seconds. He saw the fire in my eyes—the absolute, ferocious instinct of a mother who had reached her breaking point.

He slowly nodded.

"Ten minutes," Daniel said. "We stop by the office, get the ledger, and we drive up the mountain."

Ten minutes later, we were in the SUV, speeding down the icy highway toward the dark, heavily forested ridges of Blackwood Mountain.

The storm was getting worse. Wind whipped snow across the windshield in blind, white sheets. The headlights cut thin, frail beams through the darkness. In the backseat sat a heavy iron crowbar I had taken from the garage, along with a spare flashlight.

As the SUV climbed higher up the winding mountain road, the city lights vanished behind us, swallowed entirely by the wilderness.

Richard thought he was waiting for a broken, terrified son who would beg for mercy.

He had no idea that the woman he had called "ungrateful" and "unstable" was coming to collect his debt.
