Chapter 4 - The Frozen Vault

The Hargrove Ice & Cold Storage facility rose out of the river mist like a rotting iron monument to a forgotten industrial era. Its red-brick facade was blackened by decades of soot and weather, its massive arched windows long since shattered or boarded up with thick sheets of rusted corrugated tin.

Rain fell in heavy, diagonal sheets, stinging the faces of the twelve SWAT officers positioned around the building's perimeter.

Two armored BearCat vehicles sat idling quietly in the mud fifty yards from the main loading dock, their dark matte finish swallowing the dim light of the moon.

Inside the primary command vehicle, Detective Miller watched the live feed from the police drone hovering three hundred feet above the structure. The thermal imaging camera showed a single heat signature concentrated deep within the subterranean levels of the complex—twenty feet below ground level.

"We have one primary entry point that isn't rigged with perimeter sensors," the SWAT Commander, Captain Vance (Officer Vance’s older brother), explained, pointing at a digital blueprint projected on the vehicle's tactical screen. "The old ice chute on the eastern wall. It drops directly into the secondary storage gallery. If we breach the main loading doors, he’ll hear us coming five minutes before we reach the basement."

"He’s watching the perimeter," Miller said, pointing to a small thermal spike near the building's upper window. "He knows we're here. He’s got monitors down there linked to wireless trail cams set up along the access road."

"Then we don't wait for a clean approach," Captain Vance said, putting on his tactical helmet and snapping the chin strap shut. "We hit the ice chute and the main doors simultaneously. We overwhelm him before he can use her as a shield. Team Alpha, prepare for dynamic breach!"

Deep beneath the building, in a vault that had once stored tons of solid river ice, the air was cold enough to freeze water in seconds.

Sarah Jennings was tied to a heavy steel chair, her feet bound to the legs with thick industrial wire. Her face was bruised, her lip split where Frank had struck her when she fought him in the alley. But her eyes were open, fixed on the man standing across the room under the harsh light of a single halogen work lamp.

Frank Miller was carefully organizing a set of heavy steel instruments on a metal gurney. He didn't look angry; his face held an awful, methodical calm, like a carpenter preparing to frame a house.

"You shouldn't have called them, Sarah," Frank said, his voice flat and rasping in the damp quiet of the vault. "I spent six months making sure this place was ready for us. I fixed your plumbing. I cleared your fire escape. I took care of you."

Sarah pulled wildly against the wire, the steel cutting deep into her wrists, but she refused to weep. She glared at him through the tangled strands of her damp hair.

"My children..." she gasped through the thick tape covering her mouth, her voice muffled and desperate. "My children are alone... in the dark..."

Frank turned, holding a pair of heavy wire cutters in his hand. He smiled—a thin, lifeless curl of his lips that didn't reach his cold, dead eyes.

"They aren't your concern anymore, Sarah," he said softly, stepping closer to her chair. "They were dead weight. They kept you distracted. They made you look at them instead of looking at me. Once we're finished here, we're going north. I’ve got a cabin in the Panhandle. No power. No phones. Just us."

He reached out his gloved hand to touch her cheek.

Sarah pulled her head back violently and spat at his face.

Frank stopped, his smile vanishing instantly. His eyes turned black with an explosive, psychotic rage. He raised the wire cutters, his knuckles turning white as he stepped into her space—

BOOM!

The explosive breach at the main loading dock shook the heavy stone foundation of the facility, sending a cascade of dust and ancient mortar raining down from the ceiling.

Instantly, the high-pitched shriek of flashbang grenades detonated in the upper galleries—CRACK-CRACK-CRACK!— reverberating through the ventilation shafts with deafening force.

Frank froze, his head snapping toward the heavy iron door of the vault.

"Police! Don't move! Federal search warrant!"

The thunderous boots of SWAT operators sounded from the corridor above, moving with terrifying speed through the concrete passageways.

Frank spat a curse, dropping the wire cutters and lunging toward Sarah, grabbing her by her hair and pulling a long, curved hunting knife from his belt, pinning the blade directly against her throat.

"Let them come," he whispered wildly into her ear, his breath hot and rank against her skin. "They'll just find two bodies in the dark."

The heavy iron door of the vault was hit with a hydraulic spreader—the frame screaming as five thousand pounds of pressure tore the ancient hinges from the stone wall.

With a massive steel groan, the door collapsed inward, crashing onto the stone floor in a cloud of blinding white dust.

"Drop the weapon! Drop the knife!"

Three red laser dots instantly pinned themselves to Frank’s forehead and chest through the swirling smoke.
