Chapter 5 - The Final Judgment

The courtroom of the Maricopa County Superior Court was packed with reporters, legal observers, and curious onlookers. News of the sensational high-society divorce had leaked to the local media, with headlines blazing across digital screens: “Billionaire Real Estate Tycoon Dumps Hubby After Mother-in-Law’s Cruel Animal-Ch:ain Assault!”

Sitting at the plaintiff’s table, I wore a crisp navy blue pantsuit, my posture completely upright, my expression serene and resolute. Beside me sat my mother, Donna, dressed in a beautiful traditional embroidered blouse, looking calm, dignified, and completely at peace.

Across the aisle, at the defendant’s table, sat Michael and Hattie.

They looked like ghosts of their former selves. Michael’s expensive suits were wrinkled, his posture slumped in total defeat, while Hattie muttered nervously under her breath, glaring daggers across the room every time a camera flash went off.

Judge Katherine Vance—a notoriously stern and principled jurist—adjusted her glasses and looked down from her high wooden bench, reviewing the final settlement binder.

“This court has reviewed the evidence,” Judge Vance began, her voice echoing clearly through the silent courtroom. “The video footage of the incident on December 24th is among the most degrading, malicious, and unprovoked acts of harassment this bench has witnessed in twenty years on the bench. Furthermore, the financial audit confirms that the defendant, Michael Coleman, systematically misappropriated joint marital funds—99% of which originated from the petitioner’s private pre-marital assets—to subsidize unauthorized properties and debts for his mother.”

Hattie opened her mouth to protest, but her defense attorney frantically clamped a hand over her arm, hissing at her to stay silent.

“Therefore,” Judge Vance continued, striking her gavel with a sharp, echoing crack, “the court hereby rules as follows: First, the divorce petition filed by Penelope Prescott is granted with immediate effect, on the grounds of extreme emotional abuse, physical assault, and financial fraud. Second, all claims by the defendant and his family to any assets, properties, or accounts held by Prescott Holdings LLC are permanently denied and dismissed with prejudice. Third, Michael Coleman is ordered to pay full restitution of eighty-four thousand dollars in misappropriated funds within thirty days, failure of which will result in immediate criminal contempt charges and incarceration. Fourth, the restraining order protecting Donna Hayes and Penelope Prescott from Hattie Coleman and Michael Coleman is made permanent, with a mandatory five-hundred-foot buffer zone. Violation will result in immediate arrest.”

The gavel fell one final time.

A murmur of approval rippled through the gallery.

Michael buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking with silent, bitter tears of regret. He had lost his wife, his home, his social standing, and his financial security—all because of his arrogant pride and his mother’s venomous cruelty.

Hattie sat frozen, staring blankly ahead as her entire illusion of traditional aristocratic superiority crumbled into dust around her.

I stood up slowly, buttoning my blazer, and looked down at them one last time. There was no anger left in my chest—only the clean, crisp air of a new beginning.

I offered my arm to my mother.

“Come on, Mom,” I whispered softly. “Let’s go home.”

As we walked out of the courtroom doors and into the bright Arizona sunlight, flashbulbs popped and reporters shouted questions, but we didn't stop. A sleek black limousine was waiting at the curb, its door held open by Marcus with a respectful nod.

My mother climbed inside first, settling comfortably onto the plush leather seat. Before I stepped in behind her, I paused for a brief second to look back at the grand courthouse steps, feeling the warm winter wind brush against my face.

The nightmare was over. The rot had been cleared away. And the empire I had built with my own hands was finally, completely mine.
