Chapter 4 - The Vault of Retribution

The sub-basement of the estate was a dark, vaulted labyrinth of stone arches and concrete corridors built during the Prohibition era. The air down here was cold, smelling of damp earth, old oak barrels, and iron.

Victor was shoved through the heavy iron door of the lowest vault by Gianni.

The room was featureless: four concrete walls, a single bare lightbulb hanging from a black cord in the ceiling, and a heavy steel chair bolted to the floorboards.

Victor fell to his knees on the cold concrete, his hands raised in frantic surrender as Marco and Gianni stepped into the room behind me, their weapons drawn.

"Marco! Listen to me!" Victor begged, his voice echoing off the stone walls. "We can make a deal! The money in the Cayman accounts—it’s over forty million dollars! I’ll give you the private passcodes! I’ll sign over my shares in the shipping logistics company! I’ll disappear to South America! You’ll never see my face again!"

I stood in the center of the room, looking down at him.

"You offered forty million dollars for a life you stole three years ago, Victor," I said, pulling the brass tubular key from my coat pocket and letting it dangle from its chain. "This key opens Box 408 at the Fulton Vault tomorrow morning. Elena already left the master ledgers, the passcodes, and the wire transfer receipts detailing every dollar you stole."

Victor’s face collapsed into absolute, hopeless despair. "Marco... please... we’re family..."

"Family doesn't leave a mother to die in a burning car, Victor," I said flatly.

I turned to Gianni.

"The federal prosecutors in Manhattan have been looking for a way to bring down the eastern shipping syndicate for five years," I instructed my lieutenant. "Tomorrow at 8:00 AM, deliver Elena’s ledgers, Victor's offshore transaction records, and the full audio recording of his confession in my study to the Special Agent in Charge."

Victor gasped, his head snapping up in shock. "What?! The Feds?! Marco, you’re turning family evidence over to the federal government?! That breaks every rule of the syndicate! You'll be branded a rat!"

"I am not a rat, Victor," I said coldly, looking into his terrified eyes. "I am a father protecting his daughter. And as of tonight, I am retiring from the syndicate."

I stepped back toward the iron door.

"What about him, Boss?" Marco asked, pointing his weapon at Victor.

"Keep him locked in this cellar until the federal marshals arrive with an arrest warrant tomorrow morning," I commanded. "Let him spend the night in the cold, thinking about the life he gave away for money he’ll never get to spend."

"MARCO! NO! DON'T LEAVE ME HERE! MARCO!" Victor screamed, thrashing against Gianni’s grip as he was forced into the heavy steel chair.

I stepped out of the vault. The heavy iron door swung shut with a deafening CLANG, sealing Victor inside the dark, cold tomb of his own making.

I walked back up the stone stairs toward the light.
