Chapter 6 - The Feast of Grace

Two weeks later.

The dark clouds that had hung over New York had finally broken, leaving behind a crisp, golden autumn sky.

The war between the syndicates was over. Dominic Vance’s empire had been dismantled overnight, his assets seized, his lieutenants arrested or vanished into the night, leaving Gabriel Moretti as the absolute, unquestioned ruler of the city's underworld.

However, on Seventy-Second Street in Midtown Manhattan, the story being written had nothing to do with guns or money.

A massive crowd of hundreds of people lined the sidewalk out front of a grand, newly restored building. The front windows featured exquisite stained-glass arches, and the air on the street smelled heavenly of fresh yeast, roasted coffee, cinnamon, and melted chocolate.

Above the entrance hung a carved wooden sign painted in elegant gold leaf: Morning Grace Bakery & Cafe.

Inside, the grand dining room was filled with flowers, white linen tables, and happy chatter.

Standing behind the main counter, wearing a pristine white chef’s coat over an elegant green dress, was Emma Brooks. Her soft face was glowing with vibrant health, her brown hair pinned back in soft curls, a radiant, unstoppable smile gracing her lips.

Working beside her at the register was Margaret Brooks, dressed in a soft lavender sweater, proudly handing fresh paper bags of warm rolls to smiling customers. Margaret’s memory had good days and bad days, but here, surrounded by the smell of bread and the love of her daughter, her mind was at complete peace.

The brass bell above the front entrance chimed softly.

The crowd inside the bakery parted instantly.

Gabriel Moretti walked into the shop. He wore a flawless navy three-piece suit, looking every bit like the king of New York. In his left hand, he held a massive bouquet of rare white roses. In his right hand, he held the tiny fingers of seven-year-old Sophie, who wore a pink dress and walked without a single limp.

Sophie ran ahead, throwing her arms around Emma’s waist. “Emma! The lines are all the way around the block!”

Emma laughed, picking Sophie up in her arms and pressing a warm kiss to her cheek. “That’s because we put extra cinnamon in the morning batch, sweetheart!”

Gabriel stepped up to the counter, setting the white roses on the marble surface. His dark eyes locked onto Emma’s face with a deep, unshakeable devotion that made every woman in the room sigh with envy.

“Congratulations, my sweet grace,” Gabriel said, his low voice carrying smoothly across the room. He reached out, gently taking her hand—the hand that was no longer bruised or bandaged, but soft and adorned with a simple, breathtaking solitaire diamond ring he had given her three nights ago.

“You built a paradise in the middle of this cold city, Emma,” Gabriel whispered, lifting her hand to his lips and kissing her knuckles.

Emma looked around her bakery—at her happy mother, at the thriving crowd of neighborhood families, at the little girl whose life she had saved, and at the powerful, dangerous man who had torn down heaven and earth just to keep her safe.

She leaned across the counter, wrapping her arms around Gabriel’s neck, pulling him down into a warm, passionate kiss that made the entire bakery erupt into thunderous applause and cheers.

When they finally parted, Gabriel looked down at her with a soft, rare smile.

“Are you happy, Emma?” he asked gently.

Emma rested her head against his broad chest, listening to the strong, steady thud of his heart beneath his suit.

“I’m home, Gabriel,” Emma smiled, her heart overflowing with love and peace. “I’m finally home.”

And beneath the warm, golden light of her new beginning, the maid of the kitchen and the king of the dark had found their forever grace.
