Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Traitor

The oak doors of the office burst open.
Marco and Luca—Alessandro’s two most formidable, loyal bodyguards—stepped into the room, their dark suits tailored over heavy tactical armor. Guns drawn, they stepped behind Victor, blocking any chance of escape.
Victor backed against the mahogany bookshelf, his eyes wild with panic, sweating profusely through his three-thousand-dollar suit.
"Alessandro! Listen to me!" Victor begged, his suave demeanor completely shattered. "Volkov threatened my family! He forced my hand! If I didn't give him the shipping docks, he was going to kill us both!"
"You were my brother," Alessandro said softly, a deep, painful sorrow flickering in his eyes before turning to cold stone. "We bled together in the streets. I gave you power, wealth, and my complete trust. And you sold me out for fear and greed."
"Please!" Victor choked out, dropping to his knees on the hardwood floor. "Don't kill me! I can fix this! I can help you take down Volkov!"
"You can't fix anything, Victor," Alessandro said flatly. "Your existence as my attorney ends today. Your existence as a free man ends in ten minutes."
Alessandro waved his hand, and Marco stepped forward, slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto Victor’s wrists.
Instead of executing him in the dark—which was what the old Moretti syndicate would have done—Alessandro had chosen a far more ruthless, legal destruction.
With the toxicological reports, the video surveillance, and the financial audit I had helped organize, the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided Victor Vance’s law firm and private residences within three hours. Victor was hit with attempted murder, high-level racketeering, corporate fraud, and treason against federal banking laws. He faced life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Simultaneously, using the information extracted from Victor’s seized servers, Alessandro launched a lightning-fast financial and tactical strike against Nikolai Volkov’s syndicate. Within forty-eight hours, Volkov’s operations in Chicago were completely dismantled, his assets frozen, and his top lieutenants arrested or forced to flee the country.
The storm that had hovered over the Moretti estate for two long years had finally cleared.
On Sunday evening, the mansion was quietly serene. The heavy scent of tension and fear that had once filled the hallways was gone, replaced by the warm smell of roasted chicken, garlic, and fresh bread coming from the main kitchen.
I stood in the grand living room, packing my small bag. My contract with the agency was officially over, and with Victor gone and the estate stabilized, I assumed it was time for Emma and me to return to our quiet, humble life in the city.
"Mama," Emma called out, running into the room with her yellow sweater on backward. "Where is Mr. Alessandro? I have to give him his evening cookie!"
I smiled, fixing her sweater gently. "Mr. Alessandro is in the garden, sweetie. But we have to go home soon."
"Home?" a voice called out from the hallway.
I turned to see Alessandro wheeling himself into the room. He looked entirely different than he had three weeks ago. His skin was healthy and bronze, his gray eyes clear and vibrant, and though he remained in his wheelchair, he radiated a calm, undeniable power that commanded respect.
"Mr. Moretti," I said, stepping forward. "I was just getting ready to hand in my keycards to security."
Alessandro stopped his chair three feet away from me. He looked at my packed bag, then up at my face.
"Where do you think you’re going, Maya?" he asked softly.
May you like
"Home, sir. My assignment is finished. You're safe now."
Alessandro shook his head slowly. "Your assignment as a housekeeper might be finished, Maya. But your place in this house is just beginning."
