CHAPTER 14: The Trap Is Sprung

The conference room on the twelfth floor of the city’s financial district was sterile and cold. Large glass windows overlooked the skyline, but the atmosphere inside was suffocating.
Robert and Diane sat across the mahogany table, looking smug. Robert adjusted his expensive tie, a look of triumph in his eyes that made my stomach turn. Diane had a superficial smile plastered on her face, already looking at a catalog for children’s designer clothes.
"I’m glad you finally saw reason, Ethan," Robert said, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the table. "Family is family. We protect our own. Once this is signed, I will have Vanessa admitted to a private facility in Switzerland by tomorrow afternoon. She will never trouble you again."
Ethan looked at the documents, then at his watch. 11:45 AM.
"And you're sure she won't find out?" Ethan asked, acting hesitant, playing the role of the defeated son perfectly.
"Vanessa is a child playing with fire," Robert sneered. "She has no power without my money. Sign the papers, Clara, and let’s put this ugly chapter behind us."
I picked up the pen, my hand trembling slightly. Not out of fear, but out of anticipation. According to Ethan's plan, the police were stationed downstairs in unmarked cars, and a local investigative reporter—the same one who had covered the original trial—was waiting in the lobby.
Before the pen could touch the paper, the heavy double doors of the law firm’s reception area burst open.
A loud, frantic shouting echoed from the hallway. “Ma’am, you can’t go in there! This is a private meeting!”
Then came a sound that made the hairs on my arms stand up: the frantic, chaotic jangling of silver charms.
The conference room door was thrown open so hard the glass rattled. Vanessa stood in the doorway.
She looked vastly different from the pristine woman from three years ago. Her hair was wild, her eyes wide and bloodshot, fixed in a manic stare. She was wearing a trench coat, her hands buried deep inside her pockets.
"Vanessa?" Diane gasped, rising from her chair, her face draining of color. "What... how did you get here?"
"You were going to sell me out again, weren't you, Daddy?" Vanessa laughed, a high, chilling sound that echoed off the glass walls. She ignored Ethan and me entirely, her gaze locked onto Robert. "You told me if I did what you wanted, if I scared them enough to make them compliant, you would give me my inheritance back! But you're just using me to get the kid!"
My breath hitched. The pieces fell into place. Robert hadn't been blackmailed by Vanessa—he had been funding her. He was the one who had orchestrated her release, the one who had paid for the online harassment, using his daughter’s madness to terrorize us into submission. It was a joint conspiracy.
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Robert roared, his mask of civility completely shattering. He turned to the security guard who had rushed into the room. "Get her out of here! She’s insane!"
"I’m not insane! I’m your daughter!" Vanessa screamed. She pulled her right hand out of her trench coat pocket.
She wasn't holding a gun. She was holding a large, heavy thermos.
Before anyone could move, she unscrewed the lid with terrifying speed and flung the contents across the table. It wasn't water. It was a thick, smoking cloud of industrial acid she had procured from God knows where.
"If I can't have this family, no one can!" she shrieked.
Robert tried to dodge, but the burning liquid caught him full across the face and chest. A horrific, guttural scream tore from his throat as he fell to the floor, clawing at his skin as the chemical began to smoke against his expensive suit. Diane screamed hysterically, throwing herself into the corner of the room.
Vanessa turned her manic gaze toward me, unscrewing a second container from her pocket. "Now for the golden goose," she whispered, stepping toward me.
But I was already moving.
I didn't wait for Ethan. I didn't wait for the police. I reached into my purse, pulled out the silver revolver, and pointed it straight at her chest.
May you like
"Step back," I said, my voice as steady as steel. "Step back or I swear to God I will end you right here."
Vanessa froze, her eyes widening as she looked at the barrel of the gun. For the first time, the madness in her eyes was replaced by a sudden, sharp spike of genuine terror. She realized, too late, that the lamb had turned into a lion.
