Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Pretender

The following morning at 8:30 AM, Michael woke up in my luxury master bedroom, completely unaware that the ground beneath his feet had already turned to dust.
He walked into the kitchen, where Hattie was humming happily while using my imported Italian espresso machine.
"Mom," Michael smiled, stretching his arms. "Penelope will be back by noon. She always comes running back. She knows she can't do better than an architect from a good family. When she gets here, make her apologize properly before we let her stay."
"Of course, darling," Hattie smirked, sipping her espresso. "And we must make sure she transfers at least half the apartment title to you this month. It's only fair after the way she behaved."
Suddenly, Michael's phone chimed with a bank notification.
Transaction Declined: $12.50 at Coffee Bean.
Michael frowned, tapping his screen. Then another notification pinged: Account Suspended. Then another: Credit Line Terminated.
Before he could process the messages, his phone rang. It was Mr. Harrison, the Senior Managing Partner at his firm.
"Michael," Harrison’s voice boomed, tight and icy cold. "Do not come into the office today. Or ever again."
Michael froze, the mug dropping from his hand and shattering on the quartz counter. "Mr. Harrison?! What are you talking about? I have the presentation for the High-Rise Project at two o'clock!"
"The High-Rise Project client—Phoenix Crest Development—just pulled their entire forty-million-dollar account from our firm," Harrison snapped. "Their legal director, Penelope Vance, submitted certified evidence that you used corporate funds for personal expenditures and engaged in criminal assault. You are terminated effective immediately, Michael. Security has cleared out your desk, and your belongings are in a box at the guard gate."
"Penelope?!" Michael stammered, blood draining from his face. "She... she's just my wife! She works in legal, she doesn't control—"
"She owns 40% of Phoenix Crest, you arrogant fool!" Harrison roared. "She is the principal investor! You married one of the wealthiest real estate moguls in the Southwest and treated her like a subordinate?! Our legal team is serving you with a lawsuit for corporate negligence by noon!"
The line went dead.
Michael stood frozen in the pristine kitchen, his chest heaving, cold sweat pouring down his forehead.
"Michael?" Hattie asked, her smile fading into confusion. "What's wrong? Who was that?"
Before Michael could answer, a loud, thunderous knock echoed through the front door.
Michael rushed to the hallway, praying it was Penelope coming to fix things. He threw the door open.
It wasn't Penelope.
It was two armed County Sheriff Deputies, flanked by Victoria Sterling in an impeccably tailored navy suit, holding a thick stack of legal documents.
"Michael Coleman?" Deputy Vance asked sternly. "You are hereby served with an Emergency Order of Protection and a Writ of Exclusive Possession. You and Hattie Coleman have thirty minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate this property."
May you like
"Vacate?!" Hattie shrieked, rushing out from the kitchen. "This is my son's apartment! How dare you!"
Victoria stepped forward, offering a cold, terrifying smile. "Mrs. Coleman, this property is registered under the Vance Living Trust, of which my client, Penelope Vance, is the sole trustee. Your son has never owned a single square inch of this building. You have twenty-eight minutes remaining before you are arrested for criminal trespass."
