Chapter 6 - The Light Above the Lake

One Year Later.

The Mediterranean morning sun danced across the crystal-clear waters of Lake Como, casting bright silver reflections against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of our private villa.

A soft, cool breeze swept across the marble terrace, carrying the scent of wild lavender, blooming lemon trees, and fresh sea salt.

I sat at a long teakwood table on the balcony, wearing a simple white linen shirt and shorts, a cup of dark espresso steaming near my hand. On my laptop screen was an open video conference call with our legal team in Milan.

"The final transfer of the Rossi assets is complete, Don Dominic," my lead attorney reported through the speakers. "The shipping ports in Naples and Genoa have been legally converted into commercial logistics operations under a transparent holding company. The old syndicate council in Palermo has officially accepted your retirement from the underworld affairs."

"And my mother?" I asked, taking a slow sip of coffee.

"Victoria’s appeal was denied by the high court yesterday," the lawyer replied. "She will serve her full twenty-eight-year sentence at the maximum-security facility in Turin for kidnapping, attempted murder, and corporate fraud. She asked her lawyer if she could receive a photograph of her grandson for her birthday next month."

I looked down at my wedding ring, gleaming in the morning sunlight.

"Tell her lawyer no," I said plainly. "She gave up her right to be a grandmother the moment she put my wife in a cellar."

"Understood, sir. Have a wonderful day."

I closed the laptop screen, shutting off the final echo of my past life.

From inside the villa, the sound of tiny, heavy footsteps pattered across the hardwood floor, followed by a bright, high-pitched giggle.

A second later, one-year-old Leo came tumbling out onto the stone terrace on his hands and knees. He was wearing a tiny pair of denim overalls and a yellow t-shirt, his dark hair messy, his big brown eyes sparkling with mischief as he held a small wooden sailboat in his chubby fist.

"Dada!" he squealed, scrambling up against my leg and holding up the toy sailboat. "Boat! Look!"

I laughed, scooping him up into my arms and tossing him high into the air. Leo let out a loud, joy-filled laugh as I caught him, burying my face into his belly to tickle him until he gasped for air.

"Are you showing Daddy your fleet?"

Grace walked out onto the terrace carrying a tray of fresh croissants and sliced fruit.

She looked breathtaking. Her dark hair fell in soft waves down her back, her skin golden and healthy from the Italian sun. She wore a simple yellow sundress that moved gracefully with the breeze. The pale scars on her wrists—the ones left by the leather straps in the cellar—were still faintly visible, but they were no longer a source of pain. They were simply proof that she had fought and won.

She set the tray down on the table, walked up behind my chair, and wrapped her soft arms around my neck, resting her chin on my shoulder as we both watched Leo play with his boat on the teakwood floor.

"You look deep in thought," she whispered, leaning down to kiss my cheek.

"Just thinking about how close I came to losing all of this," I confessed, reaching up to gently lay my hand over hers.

Grace smiled, leaning her head against mine. "You didn't lose us, Dominic. You brought us home."

"Dada! Water!" Leo shouted, pointing his tiny toy toward the vast blue lake below our terrace.

"Alright, Captain," I laughed, standing up and lifting Leo onto my shoulders while taking Grace’s hand in mine. "Let's go down to the dock and see if your boat really floats."

As we walked down the stone steps leading through the olive groves toward the private beach below, the warm morning sun bathed our small family in golden light.

The shadows of the old Rossi estate, the iron bars, the dark cellars, and the cold lies of the past were thousands of miles behind us.

Ahead lay only the vast, open horizon of a future built not on blood and power, but on the simple, unbreakable promise of love.
