Chapter 5 - The Judgment at Pier 14

The fog over the East River was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
Pier 14 was a vast, cavernous expanse of rusting corrugated iron, shipping containers stacked four high, and dark, oily water slapping against the wooden pilings.
Inside the central warehouse, four black luxury SUVs were parked in a circle, their headlights illuminating a makeshift staging area.
Aldo Manfredi stood near a folding table covered in blueprints and shipping manifests, wearing a cashmere coat that used to belong to me. Beside him stood Camilla, wearing a floor-length mink coat and the three-million-dollar blue diamond bracelet on her delicate wrist.
Standing across from them was Lorenzo Moretti—a fat, greasy man with a thick mustache, surrounded by eight armed mercenaries carrying tactical carbines.
"The old man won't last until morning," Aldo was saying, pouring two glasses of scotch from my private reserve. "Giuliano confirmed the poison has hit his lungs. By sunrise, I announce my succession to the council, and Pier 14 is officially open for your cargo, Lorenzo."
Camilla giggled, sipping her champagne. "And my penthouse? The deed transfer is complete?"
"Everything is taken care of, my sweet," Aldo smiled, leaning over to kiss her cheek. "Dario spent thirty years building an empire, and he was foolish enough to leave the keys in the ignition."
"He was always weak," Lorenzo Moretti grunted, lighting a thick cigar. "A man who lets his heart dictate his business is a man waiting for a bullet. To the new king of the harbor."
They raised their glasses.
BOOM.
The massive steel blast doors of the warehouse were shattered inward by an armored tactical ram.
A blinding array of high-intensity floodlights swept into the dark building, illuminating the dust, the shipping containers, and the frozen, terrified faces of the traitors.
Engine roars echoed through the fog as six black Castellano armored sedans surged into the warehouse, forming a secondary ring around Aldo’s SUVs.
From the rafter walkways above, forty tactical officers from the NYPD Special Operations Division, backed by twenty of my loyal harbor enforcers, aimed red laser sights directly at the chests of Moretti’s mercenaries.
"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP THEM NOW!" megaphones screamed from the darkness.
Lorenzo Moretti’s cigar fell from his mouth. His mercenaries raised their hands instantly, dropping their carbines onto the concrete floor with a deafening clatter.
Camilla let out a blood-curdling shriek, dropping her champagne flute, which shattered into a thousand glittering shards.
Aldo stood frozen, his face turning the color of milk. "What... what is this?! Who leaked this?!"
The rear door of the central Castellano sedan opened slowly.
Marco stepped out first, holding an open umbrella against the dripping fog inside the warehouse.
Then, leaning heavily on a silver-topped cane, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, I stepped out into the blinding glare of the floodlights.
The silence that fell over Pier 14 was absolute.
Aldo’s knees literally buckled. He stumbled backward against the folding table, knocking over the bottle of fifty-year-old cognac, which spilled across the blueprints like dark blood.
"D... Dario?" Aldo whispered, his voice cracking like thin ice. "You're... you're dead... Giuliano said—"
"Giuliano is currently sitting in a federal holding cell, Aldo," I said, my voice carrying across the cavernous warehouse with the force of a thunderclap.
I took three slow, deliberate steps forward, the tip of my silver cane striking the concrete with a rhythmic, terrifying click-click-click.
Camilla fell to her knees, trembling violently, holding up her hands. "Dario! Please! I was forced! Aldo threatened me! He told me he would kill me if I didn't take the diamonds!"
I didn't even look at her. A traitor who sells her loyalty for shiny stones isn't worth the breath it takes to curse her.
I stopped six feet from Aldo Manfredi.
The man who had served me for twenty years looked at me not as a dying employer, but as an ancient, vengeful god returned from the underworld.
"Twenty years, Aldo," I said softly, my eyes locking onto his trembling frame. "I gave you a home. I gave you power. I gave you my trust."
"Dario... please..." Aldo whimpered, sweat pouring down his face. "We can talk... we can work this out... the harbor is big enough for both of us—"
"The harbor belongs to the city of New York now," I interrupted smoothly.
District Attorney Miller stepped out from behind an armored police vehicle, surrounded by ten federal agents holding handcuffs.
"Aldo Manfredi, Lorenzo Moretti, Camilla Vance," Miller announced, pulling out a thick warrant document. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, high-level narcotics trafficking, racketeering, and treason against the maritime authority."
As federal agents swarmed forward, slapping heavy steel cuffs onto Lorenzo and Camilla, Marco stepped up behind Aldo, kicking his knees out from under him.
Aldo hit the cold, wet concrete at my feet.
He looked up at me, his eyes filled with desperate, pitiful confusion. "How? How did you know? The passage... the doctor... no one knew!"
I leaned down until my face was inches from his pale, weeping ear.
"You spent twenty years studying my strengths, Aldo," I whispered into the dark. "But you forgot to look at the people you stepped on."
May you like
I stood tall, turning my back on him as the federal agents dragged him away into the flashing red and blue lights of the police vans.
The lion had reclaimed his throne.
