Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Trade

Alessandro stood before me, the tumbler of whiskey held loosely in his right hand. He didn't look angry; his expression was completely unreadable, cool and calculating.

"Listening at keyholes is a dangerous habit in this house, Catherine," he said softly.

The silver-haired man near the desk drew a silenced pistol from his coat, but Alessandro raised a hand, stopping him instantly. "Lower the weapon, Vance. She is my guest."

"She’s an ear witness to classified syndicate intelligence!" Vance argued furiously.

"She is the mother of the child who saved my life," Alessandro corrected, his voice dropping into a register that admitted no further debate. "Leave us."

Vance glared at me, adjusted his lapels with an angry twitch, snapped his gun back into his holster, and swept out of the study, slamming the heavy double doors behind him.

I stood in the center of the room, trembling, clutching my arms around my chest. "Is it true? Is David alive?"

Alessandro walked back behind his desk and sat down slowly, grimacing slightly as his surgical wounds pulled. "Sit down, Catherine."

"Answer me!" I yelled, my composure finally shattering. "Is my husband alive?!"

"Yes," Alessandro said plainly.

The word hung in the air like heavy smoke.

"Where is he?" I sobbed, sinking into a leather armchair across from him. "Why hasn't he come for us? Why did he let me think he was dead for two whole years?!"

"Because David Winters is not the man you thought you married," Alessandro explained, opening a thick manila folder on his desk and sliding a series of black-and-white surveillance photos across the polished wood toward me.

I looked down at the photos.

My stomach churned. The photos showed David—my David—his hair cut short, wearing an expensive tailored suit, standing on the deck of a luxury yacht in Miami. Sitting beside him was a striking blonde woman with her arm wrapped through his. In another photo, he was shaking hands with a high-ranking official outside a government building in Washington.

"These were taken four months ago," Alessandro said quietly. "David didn't just spy on my organization for the FBI. He spied on the FBI for a private intelligence contractor operating out of Virginia. He played every side against the middle—me, the government, the Syndicate, and... you."

"No..." I whispered, pushing the photos away as if they were poisonous. "No, he loved me! He begged me to marry him! He cried when we found out I was pregnant!"

"He used you as his ultimate cover," Alessandro said, his tone brutally direct yet devoid of malice. "A quiet, suburban wife. A clean background. A modest lifestyle. You made him look entirely unsuspicious to both federal background investigators and mob informants. You were his camouflage."

"You're lying!" I screamed, standing up and slamming my hands onto his desk. "You're a mob boss! You manipulate people for a living! You're telling me this so I’ll trust you!"

Alessandro didn't flinch. He slowly opened a side drawer, pulled out an audio cassette tape, and placed it on a small player on the corner of his desk. He hit play.

Static filled the room, followed by the clear, unmistakable voice of my husband.

"He’s getting suspicious, Vance," David’s voice said through the speaker. His tone wasn't gentle or warm; it was sharp, cold, and arrogant. "The accounting audits are closing in on the shell companies. I need the extraction team ready by Friday."

A second voice—Vance’s voice—replied: "What about your wife and the baby?"

A brief pause echoed on the recording.

"Leave them," David’s recorded voice replied without a trace of emotion. "If they vanish with me, it raises red flags with the local police. A grieving widow with a newborn baby doesn't ask questions—she just suffers quietly. It keeps the story clean. Give her enough money from the estate to pay the funeral bills and let her fade away."

The tape ended with a sharp click.

The silence that followed was terrifying.

I felt as though the air had been sucked completely out of my lungs. I sank back into the leather chair, my eyes staring blankly at the dark wood of the desk. Every memory I had of David—our wedding, our quiet dinners, his hand on my belly when Logan kicked for the first time—was instantly rewritten, painted over in cold, calculated deceit.

I wasn't his wife. I was his collateral damage.

"Why..." I rasped, my voice barely a whisper. "Why are you showing me this?"

"Because David is coming back to Baltimore tonight," Alessandro said, leaning forward, his gray eyes burning with cold vengeance. "He thinks I’m dead. He’s coming to claim the master ledger stored in my downtown vault—the ledger that contains the names of every corrupt official on his payroll. And he’s going to use your son’s identity to unlock the Swiss escrow account before he flees the country permanently."
