Chapter 5 - The Shattered Mirror

Rebuilding a life, however, always draws the envy of those who thrive in the dark.
Three months into Clara’s adoption process, as the final legal custody hearing approached, an unexpected threat emerged from the shadows of Gabriel’s past.
Arthur Vance, stripped of his board influence after Gabriel’s restructuring of Mendes Corp, had allied himself with a ruthless celebrity tabloid attorney named Richard Sterling. Sterling had filed an emergency injunction in the Massachusetts Family Court, claiming that Gabriel Mendes was an unfit guardian who had used his corporate wealth and influence to bypass proper child welfare protocols.
Worse, Sterling leaked a series of heavily edited, defamatory articles claiming that Gabriel had known about Lucia’s illness for years and had deliberately left her in poverty to avoid a public paternity scandal.
The media storm was explosive.
"Gabriel," Marcus Thorne said, pacing nervously inside Gabriel’s study at the Brookline estate. "The judge assigned to the final adoption hearing, Judge Eleanor Vance—who happens to be distant family to Arthur Vance—is taking these motions seriously. She has ordered a full judicial review of Clara's placement. They are threatening to place Clara back in temporary state custody pending an independent inquiry!"
Gabriel stood near the fireplace, his face pale, his dark eyes glowing with a terrifying, predatory calm.
"They want to take my daughter back to an orphanage?" Gabriel asked, his voice dangerously low.
"They're using her as leverage, Gabriel!" Marcus warned. "Arthur Vance wants his board seat back, and Sterling wants a multi-million-dollar out-of-court settlement to drop the smear campaign! If this goes to a public trial, Clara will be dragged through the mud, forced to testify, and forced to relive her mother's death in front of cameras!"
"No," Gabriel said flatly. "She will not step foot near a courtroom."
"Gabriel, you can't fight the state court system with corporate muscle!" Marcus pleaded. "If you defy a judicial order, they will arrest you for contempt, and Clara will be removed by force!"
Gabriel turned around. The corporate titan was gone. In his place stood a man who had forged an empire from nothing, a man who had faced down every adversary in his life and destroyed them.
"Call Julian," Gabriel commanded softly. "It's time to show Mr. Vance and his attorney what happens when you threaten the daughter of Gabriel Mendes."
Forty-eight hours later.
In a private, high-security conference room at a hotel in downtown Boston, Richard Sterling and Arthur Vance sat smugly across a mahogany table. They were expecting a defeated Gabriel Mendes, ready to sign a massive financial settlement and restore Arthur’s corporate status.
The heavy door opened. Gabriel walked in, accompanied by Julian Vance and two federal investigators from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Arthur Vance’s smug expression vanished. "What is the meaning of this?"
Gabriel sat down at the head of the table, throwing a thick folder onto the marble surface.
"In that folder, Arthur," Gabriel said coldly, "are bank records proving you diverted three million dollars of Mendes Corp pension funds into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands over the last six years. Julian’s team found the paper trail yesterday."
Arthur turned white as paper, shaking violently. "You... you're bluffing!"
"And as for you, Mr. Sterling," Gabriel turned his lethal gaze to the tabloid attorney. "The SEC investigators beside me have just executed a warrant on your law firm’s servers. They found evidence of illegal wiretapping, witness bribery, and extortion in six previous high-profile family court cases."
Sterling stood up, his chair clattering backward. "This is absurd! You can't—"
"I can, and I have," Gabriel interrupted, his voice dropping into an icy register. "By 5:00 p.m. today, Arthur, you will sign a total forfeiture of all your shares and resign from every corporate board you sit on. Sterling, you will surrender your legal license and submit a full, public retraction of every lie you published regarding my late wife and my daughter."
Gabriel leaned forward, his eyes burning into both men.

"If you hesitate for even one second," Gabriel whispered, "I will ensure both of you spend the remainder of your natural lives in a federal penitentiary. Do we understand each other?"
Ten minutes later, the documents were signed. The smear campaign was crushed before it could ever reach Clara's innocent ears.
