Chapter 5 - The Trial of Whispers

Richard’s hand trembled as he took the pen from our lawyer.
"Richard, no!" Victoria screamed, shaking his shoulder. "If you sign that, we have nothing! We're ruined!"
"We're already ruined, Victoria," Richard whispered, his voice completely broken. He looked up at me, a pathetic, desperate plea in his eyes. "Maya... please. I'm your father."
"My father died when my mother did," I said, my voice cold and unwavering.
With a shaky hand, Richard signed the document. Victoria let out a choked sob, burying her face in her hands, while Julian simply stared at the table, realizing his life of unearned luxury had just come to a permanent end.
They were escorted out of the building by our security, penniless and stripped of their social standing.
But as the door closed behind them, I felt a sudden wave of exhaustion wash over me. The battle was won, but the scars of the past seven years still remained.
Eleanor walked over and gently placed her hand on my shoulder. "You did beautifully, Maya. Your mother would be so proud of you."

"I just want to go to school, Grandmother," I said, a tear finally escaping my eye. "I just want to paint. I want to live."
"And you will," Eleanor smiled, her eyes shining with warmth. "Tomorrow is a new day."
