Chapter 3 - The Raid on Elm Street

The siren of the lead police cruiser wailed through the midnight streets of Chicago, cutting through the red lights and scattering late-night traffic like dry leaves.

I sat in the front passenger seat of Marcus’s unmarked tactical SUV, my hands clutched tightly in my lap, watching the digital clock on the dashboard tick away second by agonizing second.

12:14 AM.

Lily had less than three hours before her organ systems began shut down completely.

"We’re two minutes out," Marcus said from behind the wheel, his heavy hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were white. "The tactical unit is already staging in the alley behind Elm Street. Vanessa Cole isn't getting out of that building."

"She knew, Marcus," I said, staring out the window at the passing neon signs. "She knew the medication was assigned to an eight-year-old child. She used to work in pediatric logistics before Daniel transferred her to his private office."

"Then she’s an accessory to attempted murder," Marcus growled, hitting the gas pedal harder as we turned sharply onto Elm Street. "And she’s going to spend the next twenty years in a state penitentiary learning what happens when you mess with a child."

Two marked police cars were already parked at wild angles in front of the luxury brick apartment building at 142 Elm Street. Their strobe lights reflected wildly against the glass facade, illuminating three officers who were currently slamming a heavy iron battering ram against the building’s main entrance doors.

CRACK!

The reinforced glass shattered inward.

Marcus slammed the SUV into park, threw his door open, and unholstered his sidearm. "Stay behind me, Emily!"

We sprinted up the carpeted stairs to the fourth floor. The hallway smelled of fresh paint and expensive perfume. Outside Apartment 4B, two tactical officers were positioned on either side of the door, their weapons raised.

"Breaching in three... two... one!"

BANG!

The tactical officer kicked the heavy oak door right off its frame. The door slammed onto the hardwood floor inside with a deafening crash.

"Police! Search warrant! Hands in the air!" Marcus roared, sweeping his weapon across the sunlit, open-concept living room.

A woman’s high-pitched shriek echoed from the kitchen area.

Vanessa Cole was standing by a marble kitchen island, wearing a silk robe, holding a glass of white wine in one hand and her phone in the other. On the counter beside her sat a dark leather designer handbag, an open passport, and a metallic silver thermal cooler bag bearing the St. Matthew’s Hospital logistics seal.

She looked stunning—tall, slender, with perfectly styled blonde hair—but the moment she saw four armed police officers flooding her apartment, her pristine face twisted into pure, unadulterated terror.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping her wine glass onto the floor, where it shattered into a hundred glittering shards. "You can't just burst into my home! Do you know who I am?! I’m calling my attorney!"

"Vanessa Cole," Marcus commanded, keeping his gun trained on her chest. "Step away from the counter! Put your hands behind your head!"

I stepped past Marcus, my eyes locking directly onto the silver thermal bag sitting beside her handbag.

"The medication," I said, my voice dangerously calm.

Vanessa looked at me, her eyes narrowing as recognition dawned on her face. Her terrified expression instantly melted into a cruel, condescending sneer.

"Ah, Emily," Vanessa purred, taking a step closer to the thermal bag, her red-nailed fingers resting lightly on the zipper. "I see Daniel’s little crazy wife finally showed up. Did he send you here to beg?"

"Step away from the bag, Vanessa," I repeated, taking a step toward her.

Vanessa laughed—a high, mocking sound that sent a wave of icy fury through my veins.

"Why should I?" she sneered, leaning her weight against the counter. "This is my prescription. Daniel assigned it to me personally. My doctor signed off on the transfer. It’s for my chronic autoimmune condition. If your little brat is having a rough night, that’s between you and the hospital's billing department!"

"Your prescription?" I asked softly.

I pulled out Daniel’s corporate tablet, unlocked the screen, and faced it toward her. On the screen was the master medical audit log I had extracted from Daniel’s server ten minutes ago.

"This is the official patient ledger for St. Matthew’s Hospital," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the ruined apartment. "Lily Carter, patient ID 884-A, was assigned batch number 409-B of the injectable biological. Your name appears nowhere on the official medical requisition board. Instead, Daniel used a fraudulent override key labeled 'Emergency Overseas Re-allocation' to remove the batch from the vault."

Vanessa’s condescending smile faltered slightly.

"Furthermore," I continued, stepping right up to the marble island until only the metallic bag separated us, "I just ran a background check on your medical records through the state database using my auditor credentials. You don't have an autoimmune disease, Vanessa. You’ve never had an autoimmune disease. You were planning to sell these four doses to a private cosmetic clinic in Miami for forty thousand dollars a piece."

Vanessa’s face went dead white. She lunged forward, her hands clawing frantically toward the silver thermal bag, screaming:

"It’s mine! You can't take it! I paid for it!"

Before her fingers could touch the zipper, I grabbed a heavy crystal wine decanter sitting on the island, swung it with all the force left in my body, and brought it down hard across her forearm.

CRACK!

"AAAGH!" Vanessa screamed, clutching her bruised wrist as she stumbled backward into the kitchen cabinets, dropping to her knees on the hard tile floor.

I didn't waste a second. I grabbed the silver thermal bag, unzipped the insulated seal, and looked inside.

Four dark glass vials sat snugly inside a custom blue gel pack. The temperature gauge on the interior lining read a steady, perfect four degrees Celsius.

The seal was unbroken. The medicine was intact.

I closed the bag, clutched it against my chest like it was the most precious jewel on earth, and looked down at Vanessa, who was weeping on the floor, clutching her arm.

"Marcus," I said, never taking my eyes off her. "Arrest this monster."

Marcus stepped forward, pulling Vanessa’s arms behind her back with merciless force and snapping the steel cuffs onto her wrists.

"Vanessa Cole, you are under arrest for grand larceny of controlled medical supplies, conspiracy to commit murder of a minor, and felony insurance fraud," Marcus said, dragging her to her feet as she sobbed hysterically.

"Emily! Please!" Vanessa wept, her silk robe torn, her mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks. "It was Daniel’s idea! He told me the kid didn't need it! He said the hospital had extra doses! He tricked me!"

I turned my back on her cries, walked out of the apartment, and ran down the stairs into the night.
