Chapter 4: The Delivery Room Ambush

"Her water broke! Get a gurney now!" Alexander’s voice echoed frantically through the emergency entrance of St. Jude Medical Center.
The hospital exploded into chaotic movement as Emily was rushed down the sterile hallways, her face contorted in pain as a massive contraction ripped through her body. She was only thirty-six weeks along. The baby was coming, and the $85 million trust was hanging by a microscopic thread.
Within ten minutes, she was prepped in Delivery Room 3. But before the doctor could even perform an examination, the heavy double doors of the maternity ward were pushed open by a group of men in dark suits.
Daniel Sterling walked in, flanked by a medical administrator and a new, severe-looking doctor wearing a Manhattan General badge.
"What is the meaning of this?" Emily’s personal obstetrician, Dr. Sarah Jenkins, demanded, stepping in front of Emily’s bed. "This is a private delivery room. Get these people out of here!"
"I am the legal husband of the patient," Daniel said, his voice dripping with a desperate, chilling arrogance. He held up a document. "And this is Dr. Aris from Manhattan General. We have just filed an emergency medical power of attorney. Given my wife’s high-risk early labor, I am exercising my right to transfer her to our family’s designated facility immediately."
"You can't move her!" Alexander roared, rushing into the room, his phone glued to his ear. "She is in active labor, Daniel! Moving her now is medical malpractice!"
"The administrator signed the transfer order, Wright," Daniel sneered, gesturing to the pale hospital executive standing behind him. Arthur Sterling had spent the last two hours bribing the hospital’s board of trustees to authorize the transfer under the guise of an "emergency specialized care protocol."
They wanted to get Emily into an ambulance owned by the Sterling family, where their own doctors could perform the delivery, falsify the birth certificate timeline, or force Emily to sign the trust waiver while heavily medicated.
A massive contraction hit Emily. She screamed, her fingers digging into the guardrails of the bed. "Daniel... don't do this... please... the baby..."
Daniel walked over to the side of her bed, leaning down, his face inches from hers. His eyes were entirely void of humanity. "You should have stayed quiet, Emily. The second that boy breathes, his fortune belongs to me. You’re going into that ambulance whether you like it or not."
"Touch her and you'll leave this hospital in a body bag, Sterling."
The deep, commanding voice came from the doorway.
Everyone turned to see a tall, gray-haired man in a federal tactical vest, flanked by four armed federal marshals. It was Director Thomas Vance of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s criminal enforcement division—accompanied by a team of federal agents.
Daniel froze, his face draining of color. "Vance? What... what are you doing here? This is a civil family matter."
"It was a civil matter," Director Vance said, walking into the room, his boots thudding heavily against the linoleum floor. "Until twenty minutes ago, when the federal grand jury officially returned a true bill indictment against you, your father, and Chloe Vance for twenty-four counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and international money laundering."
The federal marshals stepped forward, their hands resting on their weapons.
Director Vance looked at the corrupt hospital administrator. "Sir, if you enforce that transfer order, you will be arrested right now as a co-conspirator to a federal felony extraction scheme. I suggest you step away from the gurney."
The administrator went pale, dropping his clipboard, and immediately backed out of the room, raising his hands.
"Daniel Sterling, you are under arrest," the marshal said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"No! Wait!" Daniel screamed, backing away until his knees hit the medical trays, scattering instruments across the floor. "My wife is giving birth! I have rights! The trust—"
"Your rights are officially read to you outside, Mr. Sterling," the marshal said, grabbing Daniel by the shoulder and slamming him against the wall, clicking the cold steel around his wrists.
As Daniel was dragged out of the delivery room, screaming and cursing, another massive contraction hit Emily.

Dr. Sarah Jenkins rushed to the foot of the bed. "Emily, look at me! Forget about them! The room is clear! It’s time to push! Protect your son!"
Emily looked up at the ceiling, tears streaming down her face, but a deep, primal strength filled her chest. She grabbed the handles, took a deep breath, and pushed with everything she had left.
