Chapter 2 - The Shadows Within

The third floor of the Duca manor was a fortress within a fortress.
It was Alessandro’s private sanctuary, a place where no staff was permitted without his direct invitation. The walls were lined with dark mahogany bookshelves, expensive modern art, and bulletproof glass windows that looked out over the sprawling estate and the distant skyline of the city.
Sophia sat on the edge of a massive, plush leather sofa, looking entirely out of place in her stained housekeeping uniform. Emma was curled up beside her, exhausted by the early morning drama, her head resting on her mother's lap as she slept fitfully, still clutching her gray rabbit.
Alessandro stood by the large desk, pouring water from a crystal decanter into a clean glass. He walked over and offered it to Sophia.
"Drink," he said.
She hesitated, her fingers trembling as she took the glass. "Thank you, sir."
"Call me Alessandro. When we are in this room, there is no 'sir' or 'boss.' We are simply two people who have survived the same shadow."
Sophia took a small sip, the cool water soothing her raw throat. She looked at him, trying to read the enigmatic expression on his face. "Why are you keeping us here? If someone wanted to poison you, and they realize Emma warned you, we are in danger. We should leave. We should run far away."
"If you run, you die," Alessandro said simply, leaning against the edge of his desk and crossing his arms. "My family's reach is long, Sophia. If the person who did this is indeed inside my own house, they have resources you cannot outrun. Here, behind these doors, you are protected by thirty armed men who answer only to me. Outside, you are prey."
"But why Ricardo?" Sophia’s voice broke, a year of suppressed grief and sudden, horrifying realization boiling to the surface. "He was just a driver. He didn't care about the family business. He just wanted to earn enough to buy us a small house in the suburbs. Why would anyone want to murder him?"
"Because Ricardo saw something he shouldn't have," Alessandro explained. "Or perhaps he drove someone to a meeting they wanted kept secret. If he was poisoned with the same toxin meant for me, it means his death wasn't an accident. It was a cleanup operation."
A soft knock on the door interrupted them. Matteo stepped inside, his expression grim. He carried a tablet in his hand.
"Boss," Matteo said, glancing briefly at Sophia and the sleeping child before looking back at Alessandro. "We have a problem."
Alessandro walked over to him, keeping his voice low so as not to wake Emma. "What did you find?"
"The security footage from the kitchen corridor has a fifteen-minute gap between three and three-fifteen this morning. A server glitch, supposedly. But the backup servers in the basement show signs of manual override. Someone bypassed the security encryption from a terminal inside the house."
"Who had access to that terminal?"
"Only three people have the administrative bypass codes," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Me, you... and your cousin, Marcus."
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed. Marcus.
Marcus Duca was Enzo’s son. He was a hot-tempered, ambitious young man who had always resented Alessandro’s authority. He had been managing the family's shipping ports, a position that gave him ample opportunity to smuggle goods—and chemicals—into the country without customs inspection.
"Where is Marcus now?" Alessandro asked.
"He's in his quarters in the west wing. He claims he was asleep all night. But his car's engine was warm when my men checked the garage twenty minutes ago."
Alessandro felt a cold, familiar anger rising in his chest. It was the anger that had made him the most feared man in the syndicate. But as he looked back at the sofa, his eyes fell on Emma. The little girl let out a soft sigh in her sleep, her tiny fingers twitching against her rabbit.
If he reacted with brute force, if he went to war with his own family immediately, the estate would become a battlefield. And a battlefield was no place for a child.
"Do not confront Marcus yet," Alessandro ordered Matteo. "Keep a tail on him. I want to know every call he makes, every text he sends. And what about the cook, Danny?"
"We searched his quarters," Matteo replied. "We found a bank slip. A deposit of fifty thousand dollars into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, dated two days ago. The transfer originated from a shell company registered in Panama."
"A shell company owned by my uncle Enzo," Alessandro filled in the blanks, his voice dangerously calm.
"Yes, boss. It looks like Danny was paid to slip the poison into your private reserve. But he claims he didn't know it was poison. He says a man masked in black approached him at his apartment, threatened his wife, and gave him a small vial of 'flavor enhancer' to put in your morning coffee, promising him the money if he did it."
"He's lying about not knowing," Alessandro muttered. "No one pays fifty thousand dollars for a flavor enhancer. Keep him locked up. But don't kill him. We need his testimony when we present this to the commission."
"And what about them?" Matteo pointed toward Sophia and Emma.

Alessandro walked back to the sofa. He looked down at Sophia, who was staring at him with a mixture of fear and hope.
"They stay here," Alessandro said. "With me."
