Chapter 5 - The Night of Reckoning

The storm outside raged violently, matching the dark storm gathering at the gates of the Moretti estate.
It was the night Marco and Leo had chosen to strike.
Three black SUVs pulled quietly up the long driveway, their headlights off. Twelve armed men poured out onto the lawn, led by Marco Rossini and Dante’s younger brother, Leo Moretti.
"Kill the guards if there are any," Marco instructed his men in a cold whisper. "Find the ledger. And make sure Dante doesn't survive the night. Make it look like a house fire."
Leo hesitated, looking up at the dark mansion. "Marco... he's my brother."
"He's a ghost, Leo!" Marco snapped. "And ghosts belong under the ground."
They kicked open the heavy oak front doors and rushed into the main foyer with weapons drawn. The house was pitch black and deathly quiet.
"Spread out!" Marco ordered.
Suddenly, the grand chandelier overhead flashed on, blinding the intruders with brilliant, dazzling light.
From the top of the grand marble staircase, a shadow stepped forward.
Marco’s jaw dropped in absolute horror.
Standing at the top of the stairs, dressed in a tailored black suit, leaning lightly on a silver-headed cane, was Dante Moretti.
He wasn't in a wheelchair. He was standing on his own two feet, his posture commanding, his eyes blazing with absolute authority.
"Looking for me, Marco?" Dante’s voice echoed like thunder through the foyer.
Before Marco could raise his weapon, heavy footsteps flooded the halls. From every doorway and side corridor, twenty heavily armed men—led by Vincenzo Vane—surrounded Marco's team, red laser sights targeting their chests.
"Drop your weapons!" Vincenzo roared.
Marco’s guards, realizing they had walked directly into an ambush set by the legendary Don himself, immediately dropped their guns onto the marble floor, raising their hands in terror.
Leo fell to his knees, weeping uncontrollably. "Dante! Please! Marco forced me into this! I'm your brother!"
Dante walked slowly down the marble staircase, step by step, the click of his cane echoing rhythmically in the silent room. He stopped three feet away from Marco Rossini.
Marco was trembling, his face pale as a sheet. "Dante... how... how are you walking?"
Dante looked down at his former lieutenant with supreme contempt. "You thought I was weak because I fell. But a man isn't defined by his legs, Marco. He is defined by his heart."
Dante motioned to Vincenzo. "Take them. Hand them over to the federal authorities along with the offshore financial records. Make sure they spend the rest of their miserable lives in a maximum-security cell."
"Yes, Don Moretti," Vincenzo replied proudly.
As Marco and Leo were dragged away in handcuffs, screaming for mercy, Dante turned toward the side corridor.
Renata and Sofia stepped out from the safe room, watching him with wide, tear-filled eyes.
Dante set his cane aside, dropped down to one knee, and opened his arms wide.

Sofia broke into a run, throwing her small arms around his neck. "Tree man! You stood up!"
Dante held the child tightly against his chest, tears finally leaking from his dark eyes. "Yes, little one. I stood up."
