Chapter 3: The Truth Uncovered

The next morning, the rain had cleared, leaving Brooklyn bathed in a crisp, sharp sunlight. Jonathan stood outside a beautifully restored brick building with a sign that read: Rivers Art Conservation & Restoration.

His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He hadn't slept a single second. His lawyers had worked through the night, uncovering the horrifying depth of the betrayal. His uncle Harrison and Rebecca's father had systematically intercepted Mariana's letters, blocked her phone calls after the divorce, and even paid off a corrupt lab technician to fake the fertility reports. Mariana had tried to tell him she was pregnant via a certified letter weeks after the signing, but Harrison had intercepted it and destroyed the evidence.

Jonathan pushed the heavy wooden door open. The scent of linseed oil, old paper, and turpentine filled the air.

Near the back of the sunlit studio, Mariana was carefully applying a solvent to an oil painting. Liam and Chloe were sitting at a small kids' table nearby, coloring quietly.

When the door chime rang, Mariana looked up. The moment she saw Jonathan, her shoulders tensed, and she immediately stepped between him and the children. "I told you, Jonathan. Leave us alone. If you try to use your billionaire lawyers to cause trouble here—"

"I’m not here with lawyers, Mariana," Jonathan interrupted, his voice thick with unshed tears. He did something the proud, untouchable billionaire had never done in his entire life.

He dropped to his knees right there on the dusty hardwood floor of her studio.

Mariana gasped, stepping back. "What are you doing? Get up."

"I know everything," Jonathan whispered, his hands trembling against his knees. "I found the altered files. I found the intercepted letters. Rebecca confessed. My uncle Harrison... they fabricated the entire thing to tear us apart because you were going to discover their fraud in the family trust. I was a fool. I was blind, arrogant, and I let them poison my mind. I threw away the only woman who ever loved me for a lie."

Tears finally spilled over Jonathan's eyes as he looked up at her. "You were pregnant, Mariana. You were pregnant with my twins, and you were all alone, and I was living in a nightmare of my own making. I don't expect you to ever forgive me. I don't deserve it. But please... let me provide for them. Let me be their father. Do whatever you want to me, sue me for everything I have, but don't hide my children from me."

Mariana stared at him, her own eyes welling with tears. For six years, she had carried the burning anger of being abandoned, believing the man she loved thought she was "broken." Seeing him now, completely stripped of his billionaire pride, bleeding out his soul on her floor, the icy wall around her heart cracked.

Liam blinked, looking up from his coloring book. "Mom? Why is the man crying?"

Mariana looked at her children, then back at Jonathan. She walked over, her footsteps soft, and gently knelt down in front of him. "They deserved a father every single day of these five years, Jonathan. I never wanted to hide them. I just wanted them to be safe from the world that destroyed us."

"I will spend the rest of my life making this world safe for them," Jonathan vowed fiercely, covering her hands with his. "I swear it."
