Chapter 5 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

Judge Vance sat frozen on the bench, her eyes staring at the dark projector screen. Her face was flushed with pure, righteous anger.

Harold, the defense attorney, slowly sank back down into his leather chair. He didn't say a word. He didn't look at Linda. He pushed his folder away from himself as if it were contaminated.

Beside him, Ben was staring at his mother in absolute horror. The lie he had defended, the story he had forced himself to believe to protect his mother, had just been shattered into a million pieces before his very eyes.

"Mom..." Ben whispered, his voice trembling violently. "You... you threw it at her?"

Linda didn't answer. Her theatrical neck brace and wheelchair persona had completely vanished. She sat upright, her face pale, her lips trembling with panic as she realized what she had just done in front of a judge.

Judge Eleanor Vance slowly turned her gaze toward Linda Miller. The cold fury in the judge's eyes was absolute.

"In my twenty-four years on the bench," Judge Vance said, her voice echoing like thunder through the quiet room, "I have rarely witnessed an act of such callous, calculated cruelty toward an innocent child."

She slammed her gavel down so hard the wooden block cracked.

"Order of the court!" Judge Vance commanded sharply. "Emergency full legal and physical custody of the minor child Elijah is granted exclusively to the mother, Maya Miller. A permanent, non-expiring protective order is hereby issued against Linda Miller, Benjamin Miller, Gary Miller, and Aaron Miller. None of the named individuals are permitted within 1,000 feet of the child or the mother under any circumstances."

"Your Honor, please—" Ben cried out, taking a step toward the bench.

"Silence!" Judge Vance roared, pointing a finger at him. "Mr. Miller, you stood by and attempted to cover up a violent felony committed against your own daughter! You are a disgrace to parenthood!"

She looked toward the back of the courtroom, where two uniformed bailiffs were already standing.

"Bailiffs," Judge Vance ordered firmly. "Take Mrs. Linda Miller into custody immediately on charges of aggravated child abuse, felony assault with a deadly weapon, and falsification of evidence. Hold her without bail pending formal arraignment."

The bailiffs stepped forward, pulling out silver handcuffs.

"No! Get away from me!" Linda shrieked, kicking her legs—proving to everyone in the room that her physical infirmity was a complete act. "I am an old woman! You can't do this to me! Ben! Gary! Do something!"

Gary turned his face away, refusing to look at his mother. Aaron put his head in his hands, weeping quietly as he realized the business, his reputation, and his freedom were all gone.

Ben dropped to his knees in the middle of the aisle, watching as the bailiffs snapped the cold steel handcuffs around his mother’s wrists and hauled her out of the courtroom screaming.

I stood beside my father and Sarah Lin, watching the chaos unfold. I felt no joy, no triumphant glee—only the deep, peaceful satisfaction of a mother who had protected her child from a pack of wolves.

Ben looked up at me from the floor, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks.

"Maya... please," he sobbed, reaching his hand out toward me across the mahogany divider. "I didn't know... I swear to God I didn't know she did it on purpose! She lied to me! Mom lied to all of us!"

I walked over to the divider, leaning down slightly so only he could hear me.

"You knew, Ben," I whispered, my voice as cold as ice. "Deep down, you knew what kind of woman your mother was. But you were too weak to stand up to her, even when your own daughter was burning. You chose your bloodline over your baby. Now, you get to lose both."

May you like

I turned my back on him and walked out of the courtroom, holding my father’s arm tightly.

Behind us, the bailiffs were already reading Ben his rights as state financial investigators stepped into the hallway with arrest warrants for corporate tax fraud.
