Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Dynasty

Three months later.

The final sentencing hearing arrived on a crisp, bright autumn morning.

The court proceedings for Evelyn Vance had been short and devastating. Faced with the mountain of forensic evidence, her son’s detailed testimony against her, and the undeniable audio-visual proof captured by my husband’s hidden camera, the jury had taken less than ninety minutes to return a verdict on all counts: GUILTY.

The courtroom was dead silent as Judge Evelyn Harris prepared to deliver the final sentences.

Sitting at the prosecution table, Rachel stood beside ADA Jenkins. In her hands, Rachel held a written Victim Impact Statement—her final words to the people who had tried to destroy her life.

"Mrs. Vance," Judge Harris said gently, nodding toward the podium. "You may address the court."

Rachel stepped up to the wooden podium. Her voice was clear, strong, and echoed through the high-ceilinged room with absolute authority.

"One hundred days ago," Rachel began, looking directly at the three defendants sitting at the defense table, "I woke up inside a locked car that was turning into an oven. I couldn't move my arms. I couldn't speak. I could hear my three-week-old daughter crying in the back seat, and I was completely helpless to save her."

She paused, taking a slow, deep breath.

"Tyler, Vanessa, and Evelyn didn't just try to kill us," Rachel continued, her eyes fixing firmly on Tyler, who refused to look up from the floor. "They tried to erase us. They wanted the world to believe that I was weak, broken, and unfit to be a mother. They wanted to steal my child’s future and cover their greed with my grave."

Rachel folded her paper and looked straight into Evelyn’s bitter, hollow eyes.

"But my mother saved us," Rachel said, her voice rising with magnificent pride. "And my father, even from beyond the grave, left us the light that exposed your darkness. You failed, Evelyn. My daughter is thriving. My family is whole. And you will spend the rest of your life answering for what you did."

A soft murmur of emotional approval rippled through the gallery.

Judge Harris nodded approvingly, then turned her attention to the defense table.

"Evelyn Vance," Judge Harris said, her voice dropping into a cold, terrifying register. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen an act of such cold-hearted, calculated cruelty. You attempted to bake your own daughter-in-law and newborn granddaughter to death inside a sealed metal box for money. You are a predator in fine clothes."

Judge Harris struck her gavel down with thunderous force.

THUD!

"On Count 1, Attempted Capital Murder, I sentence you, Evelyn Vance, to Life Imprisonment in a State Maximum Security Facility WITHOUT the Possibility of Parole."

Evelyn collapsed backward into her chair, her eyes wide with shock, as if she had truly believed her wealth would save her until the very last second.

"On Count 2, Attempted Murder, I sentence you, Tyler Vance, to Thirty-Five Years in State Prison."

"On Count 3, Conspiracy, I sentence you, Vanessa Sterling, to Fifteen Years in State Prison."

Judge Harris raised her eyes toward Rachel and me.

"Furthermore," Judge Harris declared, "this court grants a full, permanent Decree of Absolute Divorce to Rachel Montgomery, strips Tyler Vance of all parental rights permanently and retroactively, and orders full financial restitution paid from the liquidated assets of Vance Global Logistics."

THUD!

"Court is adjourned."

The gallery erupted into applause. Reporters rushed toward the doors, while bailiffs grabbed Evelyn, Tyler, and Vanessa, pulling them out through the rear exit in chains.

As Tyler was led past us, he stopped for a fraction of a second, looking at Rachel with eyes filled with pathetic, tearful regret.

"Rachel... please..." Tyler whimpered.

Rachel didn't say a word. She simply turned her back on him, took my arm, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright, golden sunlight of freedom.
