chapter 2: WHAT MY SISTER DID

My knees nearly gave out.

With trembling hands, I carefully pulled the towel away.

For a moment, my brain refused to process what I was seeing.

Emma's beautiful auburn hair—hair that reached halfway down her back that very morning—was gone.

Jagged patches remained.

Chunks had been hacked away unevenly, leaving bald spots scattered across her scalp.

It looked like someone had attacked her with a lawn mower.

My daughter buried her face against my shoulder.

"She locked the door, Mommy."

The room went silent.

I slowly turned toward Principal Hoffman.

His face was gray.

"What happened?"

The principal swallowed.

"It was Jessica."

The name hit me like a slap.

My sister.

My own sister.

Emma's aunt.

I stared at him.

"No."

His expression didn't change.

"Jessica volunteered backstage today for the school play. After the casting announcement, she became upset that Lily wasn't selected for the lead role."

"Lily wasn't selected because she forgot half her audition," I snapped.

"I know," he said quietly.

"Then what happened?"

The principal took a deep breath.

"Several children reported seeing Jessica take Emma into Classroom 12 during lunch."

My stomach twisted.

"Why?"

Nobody answered.

Because they all knew.

Jealousy.

Pure, ugly jealousy.

A teacher's aide had eventually heard crying from inside the room.

When she tried to enter, the door was locked.

By the time staff forced it open...

Emma was sitting in a chair.

Crying hysterically.

Hair covering the floor around her.

And Jessica was standing behind her holding a pair of classroom scissors.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

I couldn't breathe.

I couldn't think.

The nurse handed me a plastic evidence bag.

Inside were dozens of long auburn strands.

My daughter's hair.

My little girl's crown braid.

The braid she'd been so proud of that morning.

Gone.

I looked down at Emma.

"Did Aunt Jessica say anything?"

Emma nodded against my shoulder.

Then she whispered words I would never forget.

"She said if Lily couldn't be Alice, then nobody should want to look at me."

The room exploded.

Not literally.

But something inside me did.

Because this wasn't a tantrum.

This wasn't bad judgment.

This was cruelty.

And for the first time in my life, I realized my sister might actually be dangerous.
