Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

The phone on the conference table started vibrating just as I clicked to the slide with the revenue projections.

At first, I ignored it.

Fifteen board members sat around the polished conference table, watching me present a proposal I had spent an entire month preparing. This meeting could determine the future of our company’s newest initiative.

I couldn't afford distractions.

But then the phone buzzed again.

Longer.

More urgent.

I glanced down, ready to silence it.

My stomach dropped.

WESTFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.

Instantly, every worst-case scenario flashed through my mind.

I stepped away from the presentation and answered.

“Hello, this is Natalie Brennan.”

“Mrs. Brennan, this is Principal Hoffman.”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

The kind of calm adults use when they're trying not to panic.

“You need to come immediately,” he said. “There’s been an incident with Emma.”

My heart stopped.

“Is she hurt?”

“She’s physically unharmed,” he replied carefully. “But she’s extremely distressed. Please come now.”

I was already grabbing my purse.

The twenty-minute drive took ten.

The entire way, I kept seeing Emma’s face.

That morning she had been so excited.

She had begged me to braid her thick auburn hair into the special “Alice crown braid” she wore whenever something important happened.

Because today was the school play.

And after weeks of rehearsals, Emma had earned the lead role of Alice.

The role Lily desperately wanted.

Lily.

My niece.

My sister Rebecca’s daughter.

As I pulled into the school parking lot, a terrible memory surfaced.

Just before leaving for school, Emma had hesitated.

“What if Lily’s mad?” she had asked quietly.

At the time, I told her not to worry.

Now, as I rushed toward the principal’s office, I realized I should have listened.

Because somehow...

This had everything to do with Lily.
