Chapter 4 - The Lexicon Breach

The corporate headquarters of Lexicon Pharma rose out of the darkness like a monolith of glass and steel. It was 3:00 AM. The massive campus was completely deserted, illuminated only by the sterile white security lights outlining the perimeter.

I parked the stolen SUV directly on the curb in front of the main glass doors. My heart was pounding against my ribs like a trapped bird. I was a suburban housewife about to commit commercial burglary, but every time my courage wavered, I saw the image of Emma’s pale lips under the trauma lights.

Ten hours left, the doctor had said. Time was evaporating.

I walked up to the heavy glass entrance, my clothes soaked, mud caked on my skin. I pressed Rachel’s stolen high-security keycard against the electronic scanner.

Beep. Access Granted.

The heavy glass doors slid open with a soft hiss. I stepped into the cavernous, silent lobby. The floor was polished marble, reflecting my disheveled appearance like a horror movie poster.

"Hey! Who are you? Stand right there!" a voice boomed from the security desk near the elevators.

A heavy-set guard in a gray uniform stood up, his hand resting on his holster. He looked at my muddy clothes and the fierce, wild look in my eyes, his expression turning to deep suspicion.

"I’m Dr. Rachel Miller’s sister," I said, my voice projecting a cold authority I didn't know I possessed. I held up the high-security keycard. "There has been a catastrophic chemical contamination in Laboratory 4. Dr. Miller was injured. She sent me to retrieve the neutralizing agent Phase-9 before the toxic cloud spreads through the ventilation system. If you stop me, you will be legally responsible for the deaths of every employee in this building by morning."

The guard froze, his face draining of color. He looked at the electronic keycard in my hand, which possessed the red administrative stripe reserved only for top-tier directors. "A containment breach? The automated alarms haven't gone off—"

"Because she bypassed the system to prevent a city-wide panic!" I lied smoothly, stepping closer to him. "Call the CEO right now if you want, but while you’re on the phone, the neurotoxin is leaking into the main HVAC unit. Look at my clothes! I had to drag her out of the lab myself!"

The guard panicked. He looked at the elevator, then at his console. "The vault is on the seventh floor. But you need a biometric scan alongside that card."

"Rachel gave me her bypass code," I said, holding up a slip of paper Mark had found in her briefcase earlier. It was a sequence of twelve digits. "Show me the way, or start running out of this building right now."

"Follow me," the guard shouted, completely falling for the bluff. He sprinted toward the secure elevator, swiping his own card to override the night lock.

We rode the elevator up to the seventh floor in a tense, agonizing silence. When the doors opened, we were greeted by a long corridor lined with pressurized steel doors. At the very end of the hall was a massive vault door with a digital keypad and a glowing green retinal scanner.

"This is it," the guard said, his hands shaking. "This is the bio-hazard containment vault. Input the bypass code."

I stepped up to the panel. My hands were trembling so violently I almost dropped the card. I swiped the red-striped badge. The screen flashed: CARD ACCEPTED. INPUT SECONDARY CREDENTIALS.

I typed in the twelve-digit sequence from the paper: 4-8-8-2-1-9-9-0-3-5-7.

The screen spun for three agonizing seconds. PROCESSING...

Then, a bright red flashing text appeared: BIOMETRIC MISMATCH. RETINAL SCAN REQUIRED. ACCESS DENIED. ACCOUNT LOCKED.

A shrill, deafening alarm began to blare through the corridor. Red emergency lights bathed the hallway in a bloody glow.

"What did you do?!" the guard yelled, drawing his weapon. "You lied to me! There’s no containment breach! You're a thief!"

"Please!" I fell to my knees, holding my hands up, sobbing out of pure desperation. "My seven-year-old daughter is dying in the ICU! My sister poisoned her with a chemical from this vault! The antidote is inside! If I don't get it out, my baby dies in a few hours! Look at me! Do I look like a corporate spy?!"

The guard lowered his gun slightly, looking at my tear-stained, muddy face. He saw the pure, maternal agony in my eyes, and for a second, the rigid corporate policy wavered.

"Your sister is Rachel Vance?" the guard asked quietly.

"Yes! She trapped my daughter in her own body! Please, you have to help me open it!"

Suddenly, the elevator doors behind us clicked open.

Standing in the doorway, soaked in mud, her broken arm wrapped in a crude cloth sling, was Rachel. She had managed to escape the trunk of the car before the police arrived, driven by a manic, desperate need to retrieve her data and the serum before her life completely imploded. She held a small, silver pistol in her uninjured hand, her eyes wide and wild with a psychotic rage.

"Step away from the vault, Chloe," Rachel hissed, her voice dripping with venom. "And you... guard... put the gun down or I’ll put a bullet in your chest right now."
