Chapter 4 - THE WITHERING OF ELEANOR

By 08:00 AM the following morning, the sun broke through the grey cloud cover over downtown Richmond, casting long, golden light through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Whitaker Foodservice Supply corporate headquarters on Canal Street.

The executive boardroom on the twelfth floor was silent.

Sitting at the end of the long mahogany conference table was my mother, Eleanor Whitaker. She was dressed in her finest navy silk suit, her hair immaculately styled, holding a porcelain cup of Earl Grey tea. She was waiting for the emergency board meeting she had called to discuss "corporate restructuring in light of recent family tragedy."

She was completely unaware of what had occurred at Hangar 4 four hours earlier.

She believed Vanessa and Colin were currently at thirty thousand feet, flying safely toward a Bahamian bank account, and that I was still sitting in a dark hospital room weeping over Lucy’s bed.

The heavy double doors of the boardroom opened.

Eleanor put her teacup down, a serene, sympathetic smile appearing on her face. “Allison, dear... I came as soon as I heard. How is little Lucy doing? Is there any change—?”

She stopped talking.

Behind me stepped Detective Miller, accompanied by two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s White Collar Crime Unit, and Mr. Harrison Vance, the chief legal counsel for Whitaker Foodservice’s independent audit board.

Eleanor’s sympathetic expression shattered into a mask of sudden, cold alarm.

“What is the meaning of this?” Eleanor demanded, standing up from her leather chair. “Harrison, why are federal agents in my private boardroom?”

Mr. Vance looked at her with utter disappointment. He tossed a thick, hundred-page document onto the center of the table.

“Eleanor,” Mr. Vance said quietly. “At 03:00 AM, Colin Doyle and your daughter Vanessa were arrested at Richmond International Airport while attempting to flee the country with eight hundred thousand dollars in cash and attempting an illegal wire transfer of fourteen million dollars.”

Eleanor sank back into her chair, her face draining of all color. “What... what are you talking about? They... they were visiting family in Miami—”

“Save it, Mother,” I said, pulling out the chair across from her and sitting down. I rested my elbows on the table, lacing my fingers together. “Vanessa gave a full, recorded confession to the FBI thirty minutes ago.”

Eleanor’s lips trembled. “Vanessa... confessed?”

“She confessed to everything,” I said, my voice dripping with cold, clinical precision. “She detailed how you, Colin, and she planned the poisoning of Lucy. She handed over the text messages from your encrypted chat group where you explicitly discussed using agricultural chemicals from the warehouse to induce a non-traceable medical emergency.”

Eleanor stared at me, her chest heaving violently.

“She... she lied!” Eleanor suddenly screamed, slamming her manicured hands onto the table. “That treacherous little bitch lied to save herself! It was ALL COLIN! Colin was the one who lost the money in those offshore foreign exchange schemes! He threatened to ruin us! He said if I didn't help him delay the audit, he’d expose the tax irregularities I signed five years ago!”

“So you sacrificed your seven-year-old granddaughter to protect your tax returns?” I asked softly.

The entire boardroom went deathly quiet.

The two FBI agents stepped forward. Agent Sarah Chen pulled a set of steel handcuffs from her belt.

“Eleanor Whitaker,” Agent Chen announced in a clear, authoritative tone. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit capital murder, corporate wire fraud, embezzlement, and obstruction of justice. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

As Agent Chen pulled Eleanor’s arms behind her back, snapping the cold steel cuffs over her wrists, my mother looked at me with a hatred so deep and poisonous it was almost tangible.

“You destroyed this family, Allison!” Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking as she was pulled away from the mahogany table. “Your grandfather built this empire for US! Not for you and your pathetic military morality! You’re a monster! A cold, unfeeling monster!”

May you like

I didn't blink. I didn't turn away.

“My grandfather built this company on honor and hard work,” I said quietly as they dragged her toward the elevator doors. “You turned it into a crime syndicate. And today, the syndicate is closed.”
