Chapter 4 - The Return

The front door swung open, and Claire walked in.
She looked radiant, carrying a shopping bag from an upscale boutique, her hair perfectly styled. She was smiling, humming a light tune, completely unaffected by the fact that she had left her family in a living nightmare just twenty-four hours prior.
When she saw me sitting at the island, her smile faltered for a fraction of a second before converting into a look of perfect, practiced affection.
"Richard! Darling!" she gasped, walking over to kiss my cheek. "I didn't think you'd be home until this evening! How was the training camp?"
I turned my head slightly, letting her lips miss my skin. The air between us instantly turned to ice.
"The training was canceled early," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "Where are your bags, Claire?"
"Oh, I left them in the trunk," she said smoothly, pouring herself a cup of coffee. "The conference was just so exhausting. Brandon and the other investors kept me up until midnight reviewing the third-quarter projections. I’m just glad to be home with my beautiful family. Where are the kids? Still asleep?"
I leaned forward, resting my interlaced fingers on the counter. "The kids are safe, Claire. Far away from you."
Claire laughed, a high, nervous sound. "What is that supposed to mean? Richard, you're acting very strange. Did something happen at work?"
"Let's talk about your conference," I said, reaching into my pocket and pulling out a small black remote. I pressed the button, activating the large television mounted on the kitchen wall. "Let's review the third-quarter projections together."
The screen flashed. It didn't show charts or graphs. It showed the high-definition footage of Claire stepping into Brandon Vance’s sports car, wrapping her arms around him, and laughing while her stepdaughter watched from the kitchen window.
Claire’s coffee mug froze halfway to her mouth. The color left her face so fast she looked like a ghost.
"Richard... I... that's not what it looks like," she stammered, setting the mug down with a trembling hand. "Brandon is just an investor. He was giving me a ride because my car had a tire pressure warning... we were just celebrating a major contract..."
"Shut up, Claire," I said. It wasn't a shout. It was a command that carried the full weight of a decade in uniform.
I changed the channel on the TV.
The screen shifted to the footage from late last night. The audio played clearly through the kitchen speakers: Valerie crying out in pain, holding her back, trying desperately to drag Mateo across the tile floor while weeping from pure exhaustion.
"Daddy... my back hurts. I can't carry Mateo anymore," Valerie's recorded voice echoed through the beautiful, expensive kitchen.

Claire backed away from the counter, her hands flying to her mouth. "Richard, please... I didn't think... I told her there was food in the fridge! She’s seven, she should be able to handle a few hours alone!"
"Thirty-six hours, Claire," I said, standing up. I towered over her, the pure, unadulterated fury finally showing in my eyes. "You left a seven-year-old child and a six-month-old infant alone for thirty-six hours to sleep with another man while you drained our savings account."
