Chapter 4 - The Betrayal of the Inner Circle

Two weeks had passed since the arraignment. Lily was finally back home in our modest, sunlit apartment, sleeping in her own bed with her stuffed rabbit safely clutched in her arms. Her cheek was healing, fading from purple to a soft yellow, though she still startled whenever someone knocked too loudly on the front door.

I was sitting at the kitchen table reviewing medical bills when my phone buzzed violently against the wood.

It was an unknown number, but the area code was local. I swiped the screen and answered.

"Clara? Thank God you picked up."

It was my brother, David. His voice sounded frantic, breathy, and desperate—completely devoid of the smug arrogance he had displayed at the birthday party.

"David," I said coldly, my hand tightening around the phone. "How did you get this number? I blocked you on everything."

"Clara, please, you have to help me," David practically sobbed through the speaker. "Karen and I are drowning. The police froze all our corporate accounts this morning because of Mom and Dad's money laundering investigation. Our mortgage payment bounced. The credit cards are locked. The detectives are saying I could face five to ten years in federal prison for lying to the patrol officers on the night of the party!"

A cold, bitter satisfaction curled around my heart, but I kept my voice entirely neutral.

"You chose your side, David," I reminded him quietly. "When you stood by the cake and listened to our father brag about how worthless my daughter was, you made your bed. Now you get to lie in it."

"I was scared!" David yelled, his voice cracking with panic. "Dad controls everything! If I spoke up, he would have cut me off too! You know how he treats people who disobey him! Clara, we’re family! Can’t you talk to Detective Vance? Can’t you sign an affidavit saying it was all a misunderstanding so the prosecutors drop the conspiracy charges against me?"

"A misunderstanding?" I repeated, my voice rising sharply. "David, your nephew—no, your niece—was beaten unconscious while wearing a yellow unicorn dress for a photo op! And you stood there eating cake and pretending you didn't hear a damn thing! You are just as guilty as they are."

"Fine!" David’s tone instantly flipped from pathetic begging to venomous rage. "You think you're so righteous, Clara? You think you've won? Dad’s legal team is already filing a countersuit against you for parental alienation and defamation! They're going to strip custody of Lily away from you and put her in a state-appointed guardian home where she belongs! You have no money, no connections, and no power against the Vance estate!"

"The Vance estate is frozen under federal indictment, David," I said calmly. "And my lawyer happens to be Arthur Vance, backed by the entire Mercer-Vance philanthropic trust. Good luck with your countersuit."

I hung up the phone before he could scream another curse word, and blocked the number permanently.

I set the phone down on the table, letting out a long, shuddering breath. My hands were shaking slightly. Deep down, despite my outward strength, the fear of my father’s vast legal machinery had haunted me for years. Even from behind bars, men like Robert Vance knew how to manipulate the system, buy off witnesses, and break their enemies through endless litigation.

As if summoned by my thoughts, the front doorbell rang.

I froze. I walked cautiously to the hallway, peered through the peephole, and let out a breath of relief.

It wasn't a process server or a bailiff. It was Detective Vance, holding a large manila envelope under his arm and wearing a tight, grim smile.

I opened the door immediately.

"Detective. Come in," I said, stepping aside.

"Thanks, Clara," Vance said, walking into our cozy living room and setting the envelope on the coffee table. "I was actually just at the county jail wrapping up an interview with your brother, and I figured you’d want an update."

"David just called me five minutes ago," I admitted, crossing my arms over my chest. "He was panicking, begging me to lie to the prosecutors for him. When I refused, he threatened me with a custody countersuit from my father's lawyers."

Detective Vance let out a short, humorless laugh. "Your father's lawyers can't file a wet paper bag right now, Clara. As of two hours ago, the federal bankruptcy court and the district attorney's office seized every remaining asset of the Vance Corporation. Your father's legal team just resigned en masse because they haven't been paid in three weeks."

He tapped the manila envelope. "And as for David... well, he made a very interesting tactical error during our interrogation ten minutes ago."

"What error?" I asked, leaning forward.

"He tried to save his own skin by turning on your mother," Vance smiled grimly. "He signed a full, sworn confession detailing how Patricia and Robert deliberately orchestrated the assault to punish you for cutting ties with the family three years ago. Not only is David’s testimony locked in as a cooperating witness for the state, but he also handed us the missing puzzle piece we needed."

"Which is?"

"The paper trail of your mother’s secret offshore accounts," Vance said. "Which proves that the entire fortune your father is built on was actually stolen from your mother’s maternal trust fund back when you were a teenager—meaning Robert Vance doesn't even legally own the mansion, the company, or the wealth he used to terrorize you all your life."

I stared at the detective, completely speechless. For my entire life, my father had lorded his wealth over my head like an absolute monarch, making me feel like a beggar living on his charity.

And it wasn't even his money to begin with.
