Chapter 6 - The Golden Sun

One Year Later

The afternoon sun glittered across the blue waters of a quiet lake in northern Michigan.

A small, charming cottage with a wide wooden porch sat surrounded by tall pine trees and blooming yellow wildflowers. On the porch swing sat a big, plush rabbit with soft brown ears.

Down on the grass, seven-year-old Lily was running through the yard, her laughter ringing out clear and joyful through the warm summer air.

Her cheek had healed beautifully. While a faint, thin scar remained near her jawline, it was barely visible beneath her radiant, glowing smile. She wore a bright yellow sundress, her brown hair pinned back with a brand-new, sparkling star barrette.

"Mommy, look!" Lily shouted, running up the porch steps holding a small wooden box. "I found three pinecones that look like little trees!"

"They're beautiful, sweetie," I smiled, pulling her into my lap as we swung gently back and forth on the wooden bench.

Using the massive civil settlement awarded from my parents' liquidated estate, I had permanently severed every link to my past. I bought this peaceful lakeside home far away from the toxic politics of my old town, starting a small, successful pediatric art therapy clinic where I helped children heal from trauma.

David had tried to reach out to me once, sending a long, apologetic letter begging for forgiveness. I had marked it "Return to Sender" without reading past the first line. My daughter and I did not need broken people in our life anymore.

Lily rested her head against my chest, watching the golden light sweep across the water as the sun began to set.

"Mommy?" Lily asked softly.

"Yes, my sweet girl?"

"Are we going to stay here forever?"

I kissed the top of her head, holding her tight in my arms—safe, cherished, and loved beyond measure.

"Yes, Lily," I whispered, smiling into the warm summer breeze. "We are safe, we are happy, and we are finally home."
