Chapter 2 - The Fall of Sterling

The metallic crash of the Porsche keys hitting the tile served as the starting pistol for an entirely new kind of panic. David Sterling’s face drained of color, his arrogant smirk evaporating into pure terror as he recognized the man standing across the room. Veterans of the Chicago restaurant scene knew one absolute rule: you could cross the precinct, but if Vincent Kane looked at you with that specific expression of icy disgust, you were a ghost.

Vincent did not rush. He stepped away from the table, his movements deliberate and dangerous. He looked down at Rory, his expression softening just a fraction, before signaling Marcus, his head of security.

"Take Miss Carter to the kitchen," Vincent instructed quietly. "Get her a plate of whatever she wants. Triple-chocolate cake, hot cocoa. Make sure she is treated like royalty."

"Yes, Boss," Marcus said, instantly shifting from an enforcer into a gentle giant as he offered his massive hand to Rory.

Rory looked up at Vincent. "Are you going to make Mr. Sterling pay my mom?"

"Rory, Mr. Sterling is about to learn a very expensive lesson in mathematics," Vincent replied smoothly. "Go eat your cake. I'll handle the math."

As Marcus led her away, Vincent turned his full attention toward the bar. Sterling was backing away, pressing hard against the liquor display. The two hundred guests pretended to be invisible.

"V-Vincent," Sterling stammered. "I didn't know she was with—"

Vincent’s hand shot out, grabbing Sterling by the expensive silk lapels of his jacket and lifting him slightly off his feet, slamming him backward against the oak bar.

"A four-year-old child had to walk past seven of my armed guards to hand me an accounting error you were too arrogant to settle," Vincent whispered. "Seventy-seven days. While you drive a German sports car."

"Cash flow!" Sterling squeaked, eyes bulging. "I can write a check right now—double what I owe!"

Vincent straightened his cuffs. "The math is no longer negotiable, David. My mother spent forty years scrubbing floors downtown before she died in a charity ward because men like you treated human lives like disposable napkins."

Vincent unfolded the paper right before Sterling’s nose. "The total is five thousand four hundred thirty dollars and thirty cents. Plus damages and emotional distress."

"Name your price!" Sterling cried.

"You are going to liquidate this restaurant," Vincent stated calmly. "Every square foot of inventory, every oven, every bottle of wine. You will sell it all by midnight. You will hand one hundred percent of the cash proceeds directly to Clara Carter, plus a fifty-thousand-dollar penalty for every purple star on this paper."

Sterling gasped, knees buckling. "That's everything I own!"

Vincent leaned in close. "Consider yourself lucky I'm letting you keep your fingers. By tomorrow morning, this building will have a new deed. Am I clear?"

Sterling nodded frantically as Vincent patted him patronizingly on the cheek, leaving the disgraced businessman sliding slowly down into a pathetic heap of designer fabric.
