Chapter 4 - THE CORPORATE STRIKE

By Monday morning, the fallout within the family had escalated into a full-scale civil war.

Aunt Clara and Uncle Richard had confronted Evelyn at her house, demanding to know why she had lied to the entire family. Several relatives had openly denounced Sarah on social media for neglecting a child, leading Sarah to turn off her comments and privatize her accounts in embarrassment.

However, Evelyn and Sarah were not the type of women to accept defeat gracefully. When malice fails in private, toxic people turn to public destruction.

At 10:00 AM on Monday, while I was sitting in my office reviewing quarterly reports, my door opened. My boss, Arthur Sterling—the Senior Vice President of Operations—stood in the doorway with a dark, troubled expression.

"Elena," Arthur said quietly. "Do you have a moment? Step into my office, please."

My stomach plummeted. I stood up, smoothed down my blazer, and followed him down the carpeted hallway into his corner office.

Sitting on Arthur’s glass desk was a printout of an email that had been sent to the company’s Human Resources department at 8:15 AM from an anonymous proton mail account. Attached to the email were several cropped photos of police cars in front of my mother's house and a scathing text letter alleging that I was "under active police investigation for child neglect and filing false police reports."

The letter claimed that I was unstable, brought personal domestic drama into professional spaces, and used corporate resources during work hours to conduct personal vendettas.

"Who sent this, Arthur?" I asked, keeping my hands resting firmly on my lap despite the cold fury surging through my veins.

"It was sent anonymously to HR," Arthur said, leaning back in his leather chair. "Now, Elena, I know you. You've been our top logistics manager for three years. You're brilliant, reliable, and completely professional. But corporate compliance requires us to review any allegations involving criminal investigations."

I took a deep breath. "Arthur, this is a retaliatory attack by my mother and my sister."

I pulled out my tablet, unlocked it, and pulled up the certified document from the county prosecutor’s office that I had received that very morning.

I set the tablet on his desk. "This is the official statement from the police department. As you can see, I am listed strictly as the reporting victim and protective parent. My mother, Evelyn Vance, is currently being formally cited for misdemeanor child endangerment, and my sister is listed as a material witness who gave conflicting statements."

Arthur put on his reading glasses and thoroughly scanned the document. As he read, his forehead smoothed out, and his scowl turned into a look of deep disgust toward the email sitting on his desk.

"They sent this to my job to try to get me fired," I said, my voice steady. "They wanted to destroy my financial independence so I would be forced to crawl back to them and surrender my daughter to their control."

Arthur set the document down, pulled the printed HR email toward him, and tore it cleanly in half. He tossed it into the recycling bin beside his desk.

"This company does not entertain cowardly, weaponized personal attacks," Arthur said firmly. "I will personally speak to HR and clear this from your file immediately. Is your daughter safe, Elena?"

"She is safe," I replied, feeling a sudden, immense weight lift off my chest. "I hired a licensed, vetted full-time nanny starting today. She comes with three background checks and five stellar references."

"Good," Arthur said, offering a warm, respectful smile. "Take whatever time you need this week. Work remotely if you have to. Family comes first."

As I walked out of Arthur’s office, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text message from a real estate attorney I had hired over the weekend.

Elena, we just served the formal Cease and Desist notice and the Restraining Order petition to your mother and sister. The hearing is set for next Thursday.

I stood in the sunlit hallway of my workplace, staring at the message.

Evelyn and Sarah had tried to take my daughter, ruin my reputation, and destroy my career. They thought that because they were my "family," I would eventually fold under the pressure of guilt and tradition.

They were about to learn that a mother protecting her child does not fold. She conquers.
