Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT COUNTERSTRIKE

At 2:00 AM, the doorbell of Maya’s apartment rang.

I didn't flinch. I had already put the safety latch on the door and moved Lily’s pack-and-play crib into the interior bathroom, the safest room in the apartment with no exterior windows.

Through the peep-hole, I saw two figures. One was a tall man in a dark trench coat with sharp, piercing eyes—Marcus Vance. The second figure was a woman in a sharp navy suit carrying a briefcase: Detective Sarah Lin from the Special Victims Bureau.

I opened the door.

"Claire?" Marcus said, stepping inside and shaking off the rain. "Maya told me what happened. Show me."

Without a word, I sat them down at the table and played the cousin’s video on a large monitor. I played it once at normal speed, then zoomed in on Evelyn’s hands as she squeezed the amber bottle into Lily’s juice.

Detective Lin’s breath hitched. "Is that... did she spike the child’s drink?"

"I don't know what was in that bottle," I said, my voice ice cold. "Calculated toxic doses, a sedative, an allergen—I don't know yet. But Lily refused to drink it. That's why Evelyn snapped and struck her."

"Did you take the child to a hospital?" Detective Lin asked, taking out her notepad.

"I took her straight here because I didn't want Julian’s family legal team to intercept us at a public hospital," I replied. "I took high-resolution photos of the facial contusion under UV light twenty minutes after it happened. I also preserved the clothes Lily was wearing tonight in a sealed biohazard bag."

Marcus looked at me, a flicker of profound respect crossing his stern face. "You acted like a crime scene investigator."

"I acted like a mother whose child was attacked," I corrected him firmly. "And there’s more."

I swung the laptop screen around, opening the master file labeled Hale_Properties_Audit.xlsx.

"Evelyn Hale isn't just an abusive grandmother," I explained, scrolling through the color-coded spreadsheets. "She’s broke. She has been siphoning funds from her late husband’s family trust, which is legally tied to Julian’s child. Under Section 4B of the Hale Family Trust Deed, if the direct heir produces a child deemed 'physically or mentally incapacitated,' the estate oversight reverts entirely to the matriarch—Evelyn—granting her unrestricted access to a six-million-dollar emergency liquid fund."

Marcus leaned closer to the screen, his analytical mind tracking the numbers effortlessly. "She was trying to build a medical paper trail to prove your daughter was 'defective' so she could unlock the trust fund to cover her real estate debts."

"Exactly," I said. "And my husband, Julian, is her willing accomplice—or at best, a criminally negligent idiot who signed off on the fraud documents."

"Where is the amber bottle now?" Detective Lin asked.

"It was on the banquet table when I left," I said. "Knowing Evelyn, she threw it in the restaurant trash or took it with her in her handbag."

"If it's in the restaurant trash, we can execute an emergency warrant before the morning pickup at 6:00 AM," Detective Lin said, already standing up and dialing her phone. "Marcus, can we get an emergency temporary restraining order signed by a judge tonight?"

Marcus looked at his watch. "Judge Miller is on emergency duty tonight. With this video and the fraud files, I can have an emergency order of protection and a temporary sole custody order signed within two hours."

As Detective Lin stepped into the hallway to coordinate the evidence recovery team at the restaurant, my phone chimed on the table.

It was a text from Julian.

Claire, Mom is hysterical. Her blood pressure spiked, and we are at the emergency room. The police are on their way to Maya's apartment right now to arrest you for aggravated battery and elder abuse. If you bring Lily back to Mom’s house right now and apologize on your knees, I might convince her not to press charges. You have thirty minutes.

I looked at the message. Then I looked at Marcus.

"He thinks he’s playing chess," I said softly, showing Marcus the screen.

Marcus let out a grim laugh. "He doesn't realize we're playing with high-caliber artillery."

I picked up my phone and typed a reply to Julian.

“I’m not coming to the hospital, Julian. And if the police are coming to Maya’s apartment, tell them to save their gas. They’re already here.”

Ten minutes later, before Julian could reply, Marcus's phone buzzed. It was Judge Miller's clerk.

The emergency protection order had been granted.

Evelyn Hale and Julian Hale were officially barred from coming within 1,000 feet of myself or my daughter. Effective immediately, Julian’s parental rights were temporarily suspended pending a criminal investigation into child endangerment and attempted poisoning.

"What's the next move?" Maya asked from the kitchen doorway, holding two fresh cups of coffee.

I closed my laptop and looked toward the window where the first gray light of dawn was beginning to break through the storm clouds.

"Now," I said, "we take away their money."
