Chapter 2 - The Mask Comes Off

Clara’s jaw trembled as she stared at the glowing phone on the counter. "Mom... Mom, where did you take him? Why is his head shaved? Why does he have bruises on his arm?"

There was a brief pause on the line—not of guilt, but of slight annoyance, like a teacher dealing with an uncooperative student.

"Clara, don't be hysterical," Gertrude said smoothly, her tone dripping with patronizing condescension. "I did what needed to be done. You and David have been completely blind to that boy's real issues. I noticed weeks ago that his energy was dark, his immune system compromised. That orthopedic fall off his bike was not an accident; it was a symptom of neurological toxins."

I took a step closer to the phone. "Gertrude. This is David."

"Ah, David," Gertrude sighed lightly. "I figured you would be orchestrating a drama over this. You always were overly theatrical."

"You took my son without consent," I said, my voice dangerously steady. "You lied about taking him to his orthopedic appointment. You took him to a non-medical facility, had strangers forcefully restrain him, inject him with unknown chemicals, and shave his head. That is felony child endangerment and kidnapping."

"Oh, spare me the legal jargon, David," Gertrude snapped, her calm facade finally cracking into sharp arrogance. "I have a power of attorney draft prepared by my legal counsel regarding Ethan's medical welfare. Clara knows about his history of childhood sensitivities. I took him to Dr. Silas at the St. Jude Retreat. The head shaving was part of a heavy-metal scalp detox. The injection was merely an organic vitamin and calming mineral blend."

"He has bruises on his arm, Gertrude!" Clara cried out, her voice finally cracking through her defensive shell. "He was terrified! He thought we abandoned him!"

"He is six years old, Clara! Children don't know what is good for them!" Gertrude countered sharply. "I spent four thousand dollars of my own money tonight to cleanse his system before those toxic hospital doctors pumped him full of synthetic X-ray radiation and pharmaceuticals! You should be thanking me!"

"You left him at our back door at four in the morning like garbage," I said.

"I left him at the door because I knew you would make a scene if I walked through the front," Gertrude replied without an ounce of remorse. "Clara, I suggest you get your husband under control. I have spent years watching him undermine my role in this family. If he tries to drag the authorities into this, it will not go well for him. I have recorded every conversation we've ever had about Ethan's health. I will make sure the court sees who the real unstable parent is."

Click.

The line went dead.

Silence fell over the kitchen like a heavy lead blanket. Clara slumped onto a kitchen chair, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with quiet, horrified sobs. She was finally beginning to realize the terrifying scope of what her mother was capable of.

"David..." Clara wept. "What... what did she do?"

"I told you," I said softly, looking down at Ethan, who had fallen asleep from pure emotional exhaustion, curled up on the rug with his head in my lap. "I told you years ago that your mother doesn't love anyone. She controls people. And when she couldn't control me, she targeted our son."

I didn't waste another minute arguing with Clara. I picked Ethan up in my arms, walked into the living room, and grabbed my jacket and car keys.

"Where are you going?" Clara asked, running after me into the foyer.

"I'm taking him to the Emergency Room at the Children's Hospital," I said. "I need a full toxicological screen, a forensic physical exam, and an official medical report filed before Gertrude tries to erase what she did."

"David, wait! If you go to the ER, they'll call Child Protective Services! They'll call the police!" Clara pleaded, grabbing my arm. "It will ruin my family!"

I pulled my arm out of her grip and looked her straight in the eye—a look that ended eight years of enabling and silence.

"Gertrude isn't my family, Clara. Ethan is," I said. "You have to choose right now whose side you're on. Because if you stand between me and protecting our son, I will leave you behind with your mother."

Clara stood in the doorway, paralyzed, as I carried our son out into the cold night air and strapped him into his car seat.
