Chapter 7: The Confrontation

Chapter 7: The Confrontation

The office door opened slowly.

Victoria Hayes stepped inside.

She wasn't panicked.

She wasn't surprised.

She looked exactly as she always had—elegant, composed, and terrifyingly calm.

But this time, the mask had cracks.

Her eyes immediately locked onto the folder in Graham's hands.

For the first time in years, fear flickered across her face.

"Give me the file."

Nobody moved.

Thunder shook the building.

Graham stood.

"No."

Victoria's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand what you're holding."

"I understand enough."

"No, Graham. You understand nothing."

She took a step forward.

"The Hayes empire exists because of sacrifices."

"Sacrifices?" Graham laughed bitterly. "You mean lies?"

Victoria's composure began to slip.

"You think the world rewards honesty?"

"You accused Hannah of cheating."

"You tampered with our baby's formula."

"You lied about my father."

"You stole from your own family."

Each accusation landed harder than the last.

Victoria's face hardened.

"I did what was necessary."

"Necessary for who?" I asked.

"For all of us."

"No," Graham replied. "For you."

The room fell silent.

Then Victoria said something neither of us expected.

"I loved you."

Graham froze.

"You have a strange way of showing it."

Tears suddenly filled her eyes.

Real tears.

Not the carefully controlled emotion she usually displayed.

"When I was young, I had nothing," she whispered. "Nothing."

She looked at the portrait of Richard Hayes hanging on the wall.

"Richard offered security."

"And Charles?" Graham asked quietly.

Victoria closed her eyes.

For a moment she looked old.

Exhausted.

Defeated.

"He was the love of my life."

The confession echoed through the room.

"Then why didn't you choose him?"

"Because love doesn't feed children."

The answer stunned all of us.

For decades she had protected her image as a powerful woman who always won.

Now we saw the truth.

A frightened young woman had made one terrible choice.

Then spent thirty years making worse ones to protect it.

But sympathy could not erase the damage.

Graham looked at her sadly.

"You could have told me."

Victoria's voice broke.

"Every year it became harder."

The elevator dinged outside.

Everyone turned.

Footsteps approached.

Several footsteps.

Then the office doors burst open.

Police officers entered.

Behind them stood Charles Whitmore.

Victoria's face went white.

Charles looked at her with tears in his eyes.

"It's over, Victoria."

She stared at him.

The man she had loved.

The man she had abandoned.

May you like

The man who had finally chosen truth.

And for the first time, Victoria Hayes had no control over what happened next.
