Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Empire

Dominic spilled his scotch.

The crystal glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the Persian rug beneath the dining table as he stumbled backward, his chair scraping loudly across the hardwood floor.

“Clara?!” Dominic barked, his voice cracking with a sudden spike of panic as he rushed out of the dining room into the foyer, his face flushing a furious, mottled red. “What is the meaning of this?! Who are these men?! Security! Get security on the gate right now—”

“Your security team was relieved of duty twenty minutes ago, Mr. Sterling,” Marcus Vance interrupted smoothly. He didn't even look at Dominic; his gaze was fixed on the official legal documents he was unlatching from his briefcase. “Federal writ of preliminary asset freeze, administrative injunction, and corporate receivership notice. Served upon Vale-Tech International and all associated domestic and offshore holding entities.”

Victoria rushed out of the dining room behind her son, her face twisted in absolute fury and disbelief.

“Federal writ?!” Victoria shrieked, pointing a trembling, diamond-ringed finger at Marcus, then at me. “Are you out of your mind, Clara?! You brought thugs into our home? Dominic, call the police! Have her arrested for trespassing and harassment!”

Dominic didn't call the police. He stared at Marcus, then slowly turned his terrified eyes toward me. The color had completely drained from his face, leaving him looking chalky and hollow.

“Clara...” Dominic whispered, his voice trembling as he took a hesitant step forward. “What... what is this? What have you done? We can talk about this. You’re my wife—we can settle this like family—”

“Husband?” I tilted my head, letting out a soft, low chuckle that sent a visible shudder through his entire frame. “Dominic, you forgot a very important detail while I was away building your fortune in Singapore.”

I stepped down the final step of the staircase, stopping just two feet away from him.

The scent of his expensive cologne mixed with the sour stench of his sudden panic.

“You filed for a unilateral ex-parte divorce in a corrupt local county court six months ago,” I continued smoothly, my voice cold as winter ice. “You forged my signature on the service papers, claiming I abandoned the marriage, and you had a friendly family judge grant you sole custody of our home and our assets while I was overseas.”

Dominic’s eyes widened to the size of saucers. He hadn't expected me to find out about the secret divorce filing for at least another year.

“How... how did you—”

“Did you really think a forensic accountant who spent a decade auditing international cartels wouldn't notice when her own digital signature was scrubbed from the corporate registry?” I asked softly, stepping closer until he was forced to step back. “You thought my absence made me weak. You thought putting our son on the floor like an abused animal while your mistress played queen in my house would break my spirit.”

Brooke appeared in the doorway of the dining room, her face pale, clinging to the doorframe for support.

“Dominic, don't listen to her!” Brooke shrilled, her voice cracking with hysteria. “She’s bluffing! She’s just a bitter, exhausted mother! Call your lawyers! Call Judge Harrison! He’ll throw her in jail!”

“Judge Harrison can’t help you, Ms. Lane,” Marcus Vance stepped forward, sliding a crisp, thick document into Brooke’s trembling hands. “That’s a federal subpoena for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud, wire fraud, and embezzlement of restricted company development funds. Your name is on thirty-four separate wire transfers moving corporate capital into your personal Swiss accounts over the past eighteen months. That carries a mandatory prison sentence of up to twelve years.”

Brooke dropped the papers as if they were burning coals. The documents scattered across the marble floor, their pages fluttering like dead leaves in the draft.

“No...” Brooke whimpered, sinking to her knees in the foyer, her designer dress pooling around her. “No, this isn't real... Dominic, tell them it’s not real!”

Dominic looked down at Brooke, then across the room at his mother, and finally back at me. The arrogant, untouchable tech CEO was completely gone. Standing in his place was a cornered, desperate fraudster staring straight down the barrel of his own destruction.
