Chapter 1 - The Weight of His Coat

The silence in the grand dining hall was absolute. Forty of the city's most prominent philanthropists, socialites, and business leaders stood motionless, champagne flutes hovering in mid-air, as Richard Bennett’s words echoed off the vaulted ceilings.
“You… and your daughters… are coming with me.”
Margaret Whitmore’s jaw tightened, her pristine, perfectly powdered face twisting into a hideous contortion of rage and disbelief. "Have you lost your mind, Richard?" she spat, her voice trembling despite her best efforts at composure. "She is a servant in this house! A penniless, helpless widow! She belongs here until her husband’s debts are paid in full!"
"She owes you nothing, Margaret," Richard said calmly.
Without breaking eye contact with the matriarch, Richard unbuttoned his tailored charcoal suit jacket, slipped it off his broad shoulders, and stepped toward me. I flinched reflexively—a habit six years of emotional and physical abuse had ingrained deep into my bones.
But Richard didn't raise his hand.
With incredible gentleness, he draped the heavy, warm cashmere jacket over my shivering shoulders, covering the frayed collar of my faded maid's uniform and shielding the faint bruises creeping up my forearms. The fabric smelled faintly of sandalwood and rain. It was the warmest thing I had felt in six years.
"Where are your daughters, Emily?" Richard asked, his dark eyes focused entirely on me, completely ignoring the whispering crowd around us.
"Upstairs..." I whispered, my voice trembling, my lip still stinging where Margaret had struck me. "The third-floor linen room... she locked them inside so they wouldn't wander into the luncheon."
Richard turned to his personal head of security, a broad-shouldered man in a dark suit named Vance, who had been standing quietly near the main entrance. "Vance. Accompany Mrs. Carter upstairs and retrieve her daughters. Bring their belongings."
"Don't you dare!" Margaret shrieked, taking a step toward Vance. "Security! Stop them! This is trespassing! This is kidnapping!"
Two mansion security guards stepped forward hesitantly, but Vance didn't even slow down. He placed a hand inside his jacket, revealing a gold federal badge and a concealed firearm, and gave the guards a look so lethal they instantly took two steps backward.
"Step aside," Vance growled softly. The guards didn't hesitate; they cleared a path to the grand staircase.
I looked at Richard, tears blurring my vision. "I... I can't leave like this. My mother's jewelry... Michael's personal journals... she took them all and put them in the library safe."
Richard tilted his head slightly, a cold, ruthless edge sharpening his handsome features. "We will take what belongs to you, Emily. Every single piece."
Margaret’s face went completely pale as Richard walked right past her toward the master study and library.
"Richard Bennett, I will ruin you for this!" Margaret screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched screech that shattered her carefully crafted image in front of her donors. "You can't just walk into my home and steal from me! The Whitmore name still means something in this city!"

Richard paused at the doorway of the library, turning back just enough to look at her over his shoulder.
"The Whitmore name died with your son, Margaret," Richard said, his voice dropping to a terrifying register. "And by tomorrow morning, the entire financial world will know that the Whitmore Foundation was built on the backs of abused children and stolen life insurance."
